El Barrio lies on the northern slope of the Sierra de Villafranca, in an area of ecological and landscape significance. The village is compact and nestles against a hillside; its streets follow the contours. Those who choose El Barrio as a destination encounter not only individual buildings, but also a village streetscape in which the settlement pattern and mountain slope are closely intertwined.

Churches and Stone Architecture

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción has a single nave and is built of ashlar; rubble-stone surfaces and restrained ornamentation define its architecture. The choir area features a vault with lunettes. The church stands at the highest point of the village, at the end of Calle Altozano. Its location makes it a prominent landmark as you explore the village streets and its stepped elevation.

The Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Las Angustias is also located in El Barrio. The roof structure of its main chapel resembles that of the church. The distribution of materials is also easy to discern on the village buildings: the masonry is made predominantly of local rubble stone, while ashlar is used at building corners and around window and door openings. The Palacio de la calle del Sol adds a dated detail to this architectural picture: beneath a coat of arms, its single-piece lintel bears the year 1699.

Beside the church stands a stone fountain with a livestock trough, built from large granite blocks. The spout is separate from the basin, allowing people to drink. A report dated August 29, 2025, also mentions a one-metre-high statue of the Virgin of Guadalupe, which Santiago de Santiago had donated. It was blessed on the feast of Saint Bartholomew and was to be placed in the Church of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción in El Barrio.

Village Layout and Surroundings

The streets of El Barrio follow an irregular pattern, with bends, changes of direction, angled recesses and dead ends. The outer paths give the built-up area a circular boundary. On the eastern and southern sides, stone-built edges form a facade facing the slope or valley. These transitions show how the built village and the natural surroundings interlock without merging into a uniform surface.

Around El Barrio, scrubland alternates with wooded areas. The terrain rises to the south, where the woodland becomes denser. The junction of Travesía Chorrillo, Calle Altozano and Calle Sol seems to structure the entire village. It is a very irregular yet very beautiful meeting place. Together with the bends in the streets and the stone-built edges, this junction helps you make sense of the village’s layout as you walk around.

Hike to El Barrio

The PR-AV 55 Navares de Bardal is a 4.8-kilometre crossing of moderate difficulty that takes two hours, from San Miguel de Corneja to El Barrio. The route therefore offers a practical hiking option for planning your trip: it begins in San Miguel de Corneja and ends in the village. Since the route description is older, check trail conditions and waymarking locally before setting out. The stated distance, duration and difficulty refer to this crossing.
