Fontiveros combines architectural and cultural history with a natural area for birdwatching and the Ruta Teresiana. This gives you different priorities to consider when planning your trip: the history of San Juan de la Cruz, sacred architecture, observing nature and the tradition of pilgrimage. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Fontiveros, you can consider the town through these themes and decide which ones best suit your trip.

San Cipriano and San Juan de la Cruz

The Parroquia de San Cipriano was declared a property of special cultural interest in 1943. Its construction dates back to the 12th and 13th centuries; the church was built in the Romanesque-Mudéjar style. A late Gothic apse from the late 16th century by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón and a Baroque tower from the early 18th century complete the building. The church thus brings together several clearly distinct architectural periods.

The Parroquia is also associated with San Juan de la Cruz: he was baptised there in 1542. The Casa Natal de San Juan de la Cruz is a church and monastery built on the site of his birthplace. The monastery was inaugurated in 1723. Another part of this cultural history is the Espacio San Juan de la Cruz “Llama de amor viva”: it was inaugurated in 2011 and established in a former flour mill. These places and their distinct historical associations offer several ways to explore the history of San Juan de la Cruz in Fontiveros.

Historic buildings and local life

The Academia de Juglares de Fontiveros was founded in 1980 and includes writers and poets of national and international standing. Its 45 members are appointed annually on 14 December, the feast day of San Juan de la Cruz. This makes the town’s connection to its patron saint part of its cultural life as well.

The Ermita Santa Ana has a different architectural profile. This Renaissance building, with a square floor plan and a semicircular dome, was built around 1570. The hermitage is also known as “De la Bandera” because a French banner was kept there. D. Jerónimo Gómez de Sandoval, Lord of the Villa of Fontiveros, captured it in battle in the Bay of Gibraltar on 22 July 1641. This nickname thus links the building to a specific historical tradition. Fuente Dos is also part of the architectural history: it was renovated in 1575 with a semicircular granite arch.

Los Chorrillos, by contrast, is associated with water supply and everyday life in the past. The historic washing places were built in 1907 to supply the people of Fontiveros. Their three outlets are fed by different springs. In the past, Los Chorrillos was also a meeting place and a place for socialising for women from the surrounding area. The site thus combines a practical water-supply function with a former social role.

Laguna Grande and birdwatching

Laguna Grande o de los Arenales is a natural area for birdwatching and recreation, and is considered the town’s most important natural area. It was renovated in 2005. Birds that can be observed there include mallards, common moorhens, geese and grey herons. For trip planning, Laguna offers a different focus from the churches, historic buildings and places associated with San Juan de la Cruz: here, nature observation and recreation take centre stage.

Fontiveros on the Ruta Teresiana

Fontiveros is part of the Ruta Teresiana from Ávila to Alba de Tormes. The route offers pilgrims access to the cultural and religious richness of this journey. It has two variants: the northern route is approximately 117 km long, while the southern route is approximately 107 km long. The northern route is therefore about 10 km longer. Comparing the approximate distances gives you a specific point of reference if you want to explore the two route options.
