Horcajo de la Ribera is one of the villages in the Sierra de Piedrahíta, in the Santiago de Tormes area, located at an altitude of more than 1,300 m. The village offers panoramic views across the Tormes Valley and the Sierra de Gredos. Its landscape, trails and religious cultural heritage offer several ways to plan your trip. As you prepare for your stay, you can decide whether viewpoints, the Cross de los Pastores or historic sites should take priority.

Landscape between the Tormes and Gredos

The historic landscape included two small hills covered with oak trees. The communal Boyal pasture is also among the village's traditional features; its area is given as 400 fanegas. A historical account also describes a ravine that runs through Horcajo: its water irrigated the meadows, passed through La Aliseda and then flowed into the Río Tormes.

Routes and walking destinations

The Cross de los Pastores trail race route runs almost entirely along tracks, trails or forest roads. It is about 27 km long and has around 1,150 m of cumulative elevation gain. The start and finish are in Horcajo de la Ribera's Plaza Mayor. The Cross also includes a short mountain race, 12 km long with 400 m of cumulative elevation gain. The two formats differ in both distance and cumulative ascent, so both figures matter when comparing them. Check the regulations for the relevant edition before taking part, as route details may change.

The shared hermitage of Horcajo de la Ribera and Navasequilla is 2 km in the direction of Navasequilla and can be reached on foot. From the hermitage, views extend across the Ribera del Tormes and the Sierra de Gredos. From the La “Cama de la Virgen” viewpoint, the Circo de Gredos, Horcajo de la Ribera and its hermitage are also among the sights; the rock formation itself is a large boulder of an unusual shape. Another named site is the Mirador estelar de Horcajo de la Ribera, located in Santiago de Tormes.

Religious heritage and regional events

Horcajo is one of the villages in northern Gredos whose cultural heritage is predominantly religious. The churches and hermitages in this group are distinguished by their architecture, sculptures, altarpieces and paintings. The parish church in Horcajo de la Ribera is dedicated to Nuestra Señora de la Asunción. As with other villages in the area, Horcajo is thought to have developed from temporary shepherds’ huts or pastures into a permanently inhabited settlement sometime between the 10th and 12th centuries.

The shared Romería of Horcajo de la Ribera and Navasequilla is scheduled for the third week of June; the patron saint’s celebration in honor of Santiago Apóstol is listed for July 25. Check locally before your trip to confirm the dates in the current festival calendar.
