Navalguijo: Mountain Landscape and Granite Architecture
Accommodation in Navalguijo
Navalguijo is one of the settlements in the Sierra de Gredos Regional Park. Several different aspects of the area may be of interest when planning your trip: the granite character of the village, the paths along the Garganta de los Caballeros and the mountain landscape with its glacial features. The surrounding area includes meadows, hills, reforested pine forests and vegetation along the banks of gorges and streams. Depending on your interests, you can focus on nature, a specific hike or the village’s architecture.
Mountain Landscape and Trails
The glacial system of the Garganta de los Caballeros is particularly striking. It features an alpine mountain landscape with a U-shaped valley, ridges and crests. The valley profile and the mountain ranges describe different features within this mountain system: the U-shape characterizes the valley, while the ridges and crests highlight the contours of the terrain. Together with the meadows, hills, reforested pine forests and riverside vegetation, they create a landscape in which mountain formations and plant habitats play equally important roles.
The Pinar de Navalguijo is in the higher part of the village, along the path to the waterfall and the source of the Garganta de los Caballeros. The forest, waterfall and source are therefore specific landmarks in the local landscape. The Garganta is also characterized by its glacial features, as well as its gorges and streams.
The PR-AV 40 and Laguna de los Caballeros
The PR-AV 40 Senda de la Laguna de los Caballeros is an 11 km out-and-back route, rated moderate to challenging. Distance and difficulty are two different considerations when planning: the number of kilometres describes the route length, while the rating indicates how demanding the hike is. Before setting out, assess the conditions and your own ability. Trail conditions and signage may change; the stated distance may vary slightly depending on the track or updated signage.
A path leads from Navalguijo to Laguna de los Caballeros. The lagoon lies in a glacial cirque bounded by the Riscos Altos range and the Campanario barrier; Jurraco and La Covacha are nearby. A glacial cirque is a bowl-shaped area of terrain enclosed by the surrounding heights. These named ranges give the destination a specific geographical setting and add to the description of the glacial landscape.
Swimming Pools and History along the Garganta
Along some sections of the path beside the stream, the Garganta de los Caballeros has attractive natural swimming pools suitable for swimming. Conditions can vary seasonally. The pools are located along particular sections of the path, providing another connection with nature alongside the mountain landscape.
The remains of a modest iron mine, which was worked for a time, can also be found along the path beside the Garganta. The former iron mining is another aspect of the landscape along the Garganta, alongside the valley’s form, the stream and the swimming pools.
Granite Architecture in the Village
The village’s appearance can also be appreciated through its architectural details. Navalguijo’s houses have granite masonry façades; large blocks frame the openings, and some balconies rest on substantial granite corbels. Granite serves several different functions: as façade material, as framing for openings and as a load-bearing element beneath balconies. Architecture enthusiasts can look at these features separately: the masonry as a surface, the highlighted openings and the occasional balconies. In this way, the same material combines different forms and functions throughout the village.
