Piedrahita: City Walls, Palacio and Trails
Accommodation in Piedrahita
If you’re looking for a hotel in Piedrahita, you can plan your stay around historic buildings, a route or a specific date. Local cultural highlights range from the medieval city walls to the Palacio de los Duques de Alba, along with routes of different lengths and types. Seasonal activities, annual festivals and regional foods offer further options. Before booking, you can consider whether you’re more interested in local history, outdoor activity or a particular date.
Local History and Buildings
On January 10, 2008, the Junta de Castilla y León designated Piedrahita a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Histórico category. The medieval city walls enclosed the town with five gates: the Ávila Gate, El Mirón Gate, El Barco Gate, La Horcajada Gate and Puerta Nueva. The last of these was opened in the 15th century. Remains of medieval city walls dating from the 12th and 15th centuries have been preserved.
Plaza Mayor is a typically Castilian square, almost completely lined with arcades; the ensemble includes 41 traditional buildings. The Palacio de los Duques de Alba was built between 1755 and 1766 on the site of the former Álvarez de Toledo castle. Francisco de Goya stayed at the Palacio in 1786. A garden with flowerbeds, fountains and ponds was laid out later. It belongs to the Palacio and is now a municipal park.
The Carmelite monastery also has historic details: its portal dates from the late 15th century and bears the coat of arms of the Dukes of Alba. The monastery is home to the painting “El Granadino” by Alonso Cano, which is currently displayed as part of the Museo de Arte Sacro de Piedrahíta. If you specifically want to see the painting, check before your visit whether it is still on display.
Routes and Seasonal Activities
The Cerro de la Cruz route is a circular hiking trail about 8.5 kilometers long, starting and ending in Piedrahita. Along the way, it offers sweeping views over the Valle del Corneja. The Ruta de la Salud follows a different format: it includes a 22.82-kilometer stage from Piedrahita to Villanueva del Campillo. When planning, note that the two routes differ both in length and in whether the trail returns to its starting point or describes a stage between two places.
Hang-gliding and paragliding flights operate in Piedrahita from April through the end of October. Weather and availability with individual providers may vary. If you plan to take part in this seasonal activity, check the specific options for your dates.
Festivals, Market and Regional Cuisine
Every year on the first Monday after Whit Sunday, a pilgrimage takes place at the Ermita de la Virgen de la Vega in honor of the patron saint of the Valle del Corneja. Since the date is determined by Easter, it falls on a different calendar date each year. If the pilgrimage is a reason for your trip, check the date for the relevant year.
A national fair is scheduled for the last weekend in June, alongside a traditional market set in the 18th century. The market features handcrafted goods made from food, wood, metal, glass, textiles and silver. The fair also includes an exhibition of Spanish purebred horses from breeding farms across Spain. Dates may change in some years, so check the current dates and program before traveling.
During a visit, guests can try Avileña beef and products made from Iberian pigs. Piedrahita’s traditional slaughter-festival dishes include patatas revolconas with torreznos. These dishes and products offer different insights into the local food culture: on the one hand, the products guests can try; on the other, the cuisine of the matanza.
