Discover San Juan de la Encinilla
Accommodation in San Juan de la Encinilla
San Juan de la Encinilla offers several distinct points of interest to help you plan your trip: the Albornos–San Juan de la Encinilla circular route, the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista and Laguna Redonda. Together, they take you from nature and water use to church architecture and sacred art. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether landscape or cultural history will shape your stay.
A route combining nature, culture and water use
A project report from July 2025 describes the Albornos–San Juan de la Encinilla interpretive route as a circular walk. It is part of the LIFE IP Duero interpretive routes network. At its ecological and cultural points of interest, the route explains the area’s natural values, local flora and fauna, and the history of water use in this area. Its thematic focus therefore combines observing nature with a cultural and historical perspective on how water has been used. The circular route and the topics it covers provide a concrete guide if you would like to consider the landscape and local nature alongside the town’s historical sights.
Iglesia de San Juan Bautista: architecture and altarpiece
The Iglesia de San Juan Bautista was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1982. The three-nave church is divided by large round arches on Doric columns. The three naves are the lengthwise sections of the interior; arches and columns separate them from one another. The pentagonal main chapel is covered by a ribbed vault featuring tiercerons and curved ribs. This makes it possible to distinguish the church interior’s basic layout from the design of its vault as two separate architectural features.
The main altarpiece is also a specific art-historical highlight: it dates from the 16th century and was completed in 1553. Its imagery depicts scenes from the lives of John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary and Jesus—from the Annunciation to Pentecost. Sculptors Isidro de Villoldo and Cornielis de Holanda were among those who contributed to its creation. The dates mark different events: 1553 is the year the altarpiece was completed, while 1982 marks the church’s declaration as a historic-artistic monument.
Laguna Redonda and the water landscape
Laguna Redonda is two kilometres from San Juan de la Encinilla, on the road to Sigeres in the Canalizas area. It holds permanent, shallow brackish water and has extensive floating or surface-level vegetation; water conditions can also change seasonally. Both the water and plant growth shape the character of this wetland. In 2022, the LIFE-IP-Duero project reached an agreement with San Juan de la Encinilla to restore Laguna Redonda. The body of water thus links natural features with a specific historical reference to a restoration project.
San Antonio and San Juan: feast days on the calendar
