Walking Trails and Landscapes

The trails and walks associated with Cótar reveal different sides of the landscape. At times, the focus is on landforms and higher-elevation areas; at others, on the transition between cultivated land and woodland. There are also opportunities for nature watching, as well as a walk through urban and municipal green spaces. This lets you choose how to explore Cótar based on the interests that matter to your trip, rather than treating all the trails described as a single type of route.

During the environmental walk “Biodiversidad, Geomorfología y Paisaje en el entorno de Cótar,” held on 21 September 2021, the route began at the square in the Cótar district. From there, it passed through small valley hollows to the higher-elevation areas of the Páramo plateau. The route brings the transition from the hollows to the plateau into view. If you are interested in geomorphology and landscape, the focus is on these landforms and their sequence.

The environmental trail “Uniendo barrios: Villímar – Cotar” is a circular route of almost 12 km. During the environmental walk held on 25 March 2025, the route reached Cótar after passing through extensive cultivated areas interspersed with small patches of woodland. It also passes through a woodland of cypress and Laricio pine. The almost twelve-kilometre distance gives you a practical reference for planning your route. Compared with the route to the Páramo plateau, this one focuses on its circular layout, length and cultural landscape.

Nature Watching and Green Spaces

The environmental walk “Naturaleza y Biodiversidad en el entorno de Cótar” starts in Cótar. In its natural surroundings, you can observe flowering plants, shrubs and trees, numerous bird species, and signs of mammals, reptiles and amphibians. The description of the landscape and nature was updated in 2025; the event information itself refers to 2019. One distinction is important for nature watching: plants and bird species are things to observe, while for mammals, reptiles and amphibians, the focus is specifically on their tracks and signs.

The walk “Barrio de Cótar – Alto de las Torrecillas” passes through green spaces in the city and municipality. It complements the landscape-focused trails with an urban and municipal perspective. If you distinguish excursions by their surroundings, this walk offers a distinct focus: green spaces in urban and municipal settings.

A report from September 2024 mentioned the patronal festival held on 24 September in the districts of Cótar and Villatoro in honour of Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes. If you are planning to travel specifically for a celebration, check the exact event dates in advance.

You can choose among the options based on specific interests: landforms on the trail to the Páramo, distance and cultural landscape on the circular route, and urban green spaces on the “Barrio de Cótar – Alto de las Torrecillas” walk. The environmental walk starting in Cótar offers another way to explore the area through nature watching.
