If you are looking for a hotel in Lodoso, local history and landscape can shape your travel plans. The town’s highlights include the Renaissance church of San Cristóbal, the “El Concejo” Ethnographic Museum, historic buildings and the Páramo landscape. Religious art, everyday history and astronomical connections offer different perspectives.

San Cristóbal Church and its Art

San Cristóbal Church is a two-nave Renaissance building with stone vaults and Romanesque remains. Renaissance and Romanesque traces stand side by side in the same building—a tangible point of reference if you are interested in the different historical layers of a place. The Renaissance portal dates from 1543. Fluted columns, a frieze and a stone niche containing Saint Christopher define its design. The church also contains restored 16th-century frescoes depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ.

The term “two-nave” refers to the church’s division into two naves and complements the details of the portal and frescoes with a description of its architectural form. The portal, too, can be appreciated through its details: fluting refers to the vertical grooves in the columns; the frieze and niche complete its design. The basic form of the Renaissance building and its religious imagery thus stand as distinct aspects of the church.

The Museum: Everyday Life and Astronomy

The “El Concejo” Ethnographic Museum is housed in the restored former Casa del Concejo next to San Cristóbal Church. The location connects the history of a former town hall with its proximity to the church, while the collection focuses on another subject: traditional household objects reflect the way of life of the inhabitants of the Úrbel basin in past centuries. The focus is therefore on everyday life in the region, not just religious art.

The museum also contains audiovisual material about astronomical observations. This content broadens its scope to include a scientific connection and offers a different perspective from the historical objects. In May 2022, the Lodoso Astronomical Centre also received Starlight Reserve certification. In general, a Starlight designation recognizes opportunities for astronomical observation as well as educational, cultural or recreational activities related to astronomical events.

Páramo Landscape and Historic Buildings

Lodoso lies in a flat hollow in the Páramos, formed by a stream that flows into the Úrbel. The Arroyo del Vallejo also adds to the greenery of the surrounding Páramo landscape with its riverside vegetation. The recently restored medieval bridge adds a historic landmark from another era to the town’s buildings.

Northwest of Lodoso lies the 16th-century Ermita de Santa Marina. It has some Romanesque remains and stands beside a three-spout fountain and a livestock watering trough. At the hermitage, a 16th-century date and older Romanesque traces thus come together. The chapel, fountain and watering trough are further tangible features of this site near Lodoso.
