Nava de Roa combines wine tradition with architectural heritage and landscapes that can be experienced at specific places. On Monte Calvario are the ruins of the Ermita de Santa Ana, traditional wine cellars and remains of old wine presses. The town also preserves examples of half-timbered architecture, while the Sendero de AbellĂłn offers views of several types of landscape. During your stay, you can therefore choose between a named wine experience, historic buildings and nature along a trail.

Wine Experience and Wine Tradition

The “Inmersion en el terroir” experience at Bodegas y Viñedos Monteabellón includes a tour of the vineyard and winery, with six interactive stations. It also includes an aperitif with two wines at the Mirador de La Blanquera. The tour takes you through the vineyard and winery, while the aperitif is served at a named viewpoint. If you plan to take part, check availability and the date in advance.

Monte Calvario offers another connection to wine. Traditional wine cellars remain on its slopes, along with the remains of old wine presses. The underground wine cellars of Valreinas are also located on Monte Calvario, in the municipality of Nava de Roa. These architectural traces complement the experience at MonteabellĂłn with a more traditional aspect of the wine heritage.

Architectural Heritage and Local History

The Ermita de Santa Ana is located on Monte Calvario. It was built in the Baroque style and is currently in ruins. Nava de Roa’s traditional architecture is also represented by surviving examples, including buildings with half-timbered walls. Half-timbering is a construction method in which a wooden framework divides the wall into sections. Some of these buildings survived the fire that struck the town in the 19th century. This links a specific architectural style with an important event in the town’s history.

Landscape and Nature Watching

The Sendero de Abellón, also known as PRC-BU 166, offers views of Monte Abellón, the valley of the La Pradina stream and the slopes of the Páramo de Corcos. Wildlife along the trail includes rabbits and common woodland birds such as great tits, crested tits, wood pigeons and coal tits. The landscape and wildlife offer different points of interest: on the one hand, there are the mountain, stream valley and páramo slopes; on the other, individual animals and bird species. The trail thus combines views of different landscapes with opportunities to observe nature.

Planning Around Festival Dates

The festival in honor of San Antolín Mártir is listed for September 2, and the festival in honor of San Gregorio Nacianceno for May 9. The dates fall at different times of the year. If you would like to plan your trip around either festival, check the local program in advance.
