Población De Arreba brings together local history and built heritage. A Baroque church, rows of traditional houses and examples of rural Romanesque architecture give the village several historical points of interest. There is also a local variation of a game, an archived musical example and the starting point of an environmental walk from 2020. When planning your trip, consider whether you are more interested in architecture, local culture or the natural landscape.

Church and Village Landscape

The Church of Santa Isabel is a Baroque church. Its nave—the main space—is rectangular, and exterior buttresses divide the building into three sections. Población De Arreba also preserves a group of traditional houses arranged in rows. The single church thus contrasts with a group of houses whose arrangement is its defining feature.

Zuble and Building History

The ruins of the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Zuble are another historical point of interest. They lie halfway between Población De Arreba and Báscones de Zamanzas, on an old medieval path at the wooded edge of the valley. The hermitage was built in the rural Romanesque style sometime between the 12th and 13th centuries. Compared with the Baroque Church of Santa Isabel, Zuble adds a different period and style to the local architectural history. The sites also differ in their relationship to the village: Santa Isabel is the church in Población De Arreba, while the Zuble ruins lie between the two villages along an old path.

Local Culture and Nature

Local culture includes a bowling alley with a single pin. Residents continue to play a variation using three pins and a mico. An archived example of pandereta singing from Población De Arreba begins with a jota; the recording is dated December 31, 1993. The pandereta is a frame drum. A continuing game-playing tradition and a historically dated musical example thus sit side by side.

In 2020, the environmental walk “El desfiladero de Las Palancas y su entorno” started in Población De Arreba. At the edge of Población De Arreba stands the Fuente de las Ánimas, protected by a simple stone structure with a lintel and a segmental arch.
