Valdelateja lies where the Rudrón flows into the Ebro, within the Parque Natural de las Hoces del Alto Ebro y Rudrón. The routes around the village each have a different focus: the river gorge and its cliffs, different types of woodland, a trail across a high plateau, or the architecture of Castrosiero. When planning your stay, you can prioritize these landscape and cultural themes according to what interests you most.

Gorges, Woodlands, and River Views

The Cañón del Ebro route starts in Valdelateja. At the trailhead, a stone bridge crosses the Rudrón, and the parish church marks the start of the trail. The route passes through a limestone gorge with cliffs up to 250 meters high. This landscape is defined by remarkable biodiversity and hiking trails. Castrosiero is a blunt, pyramidal limestone rock that rises about 200 meters above the Rudrón. From the highest point on the Castrosiero route, you can see the Rudrón's abandoned meander.

The Hoces entre Orbaneja y Pesquera route showcases different woodland landscapes: it passes through beech forests, mixed oak forests, and low-growing oak stands. Its southern variant runs through Valdelateja. Thus, the various trails take in gorges and cliffs alongside several types of woodland; the southern variant also includes the village in its route.

Routes with Different Itineraries

The San Felices–Valdelateja section is 10.7 kilometers long. The route through the valley is recommended for the outward journey, and the trail across the high plateau for the return. This split by direction gives you two different landscape perspectives to consider when planning. Distances and routes may change, so check the latest trail information before setting out.

The trail to the Ermita de las Santas Centola y Elena also has a clear focus: the 1-kilometer climb offers views of the Rudrón valley and Valdelateja's abandoned meander. The return leg of the Castrosiero route descends to Valdelateja along a medieval paved path and crosses the Rudrón on the village's stone bridge. This means you can plan the climb to the Ermita and the historic descent as distinct sections of your route.

Architecture and History on Castrosiero

Valdelateja's traditional Montañés architecture includes two-storey stone houses with gabled roofs and continuous wooden balconies. The Ermita de las Santas Centola y Elena stands on Castrosiero; it is a late Visigothic religious building dating from the late 8th century. It sits on a high plateau and offers views over the gorge formed by the Rudrón and Ebro rivers. Two early medieval liturgical objects found inside the Ermita are now held at the Museo Arqueológico de Burgos.
