Zuzones lies on the banks of the Duero. The Church of San Martín de Tours stands on a rise in the terrain near the river and is considered one of the town’s most notable sights. Below the church is a stone-carved plaque commemorating three religious figures from Zuzones whom the Vatican beatified as martyrs of the Spanish Civil War. The location on the Duero and the religious memorial sites offer different points of interest for a trip. If you are interested in local history, the plaque connects the religious figures’ origins with a specific period in Spanish history.

Winemaking and its heritage

Winemaking is another important cultural feature. An old wine press dating from 1850 was recently restored by the La Fernosa cultural association. Today, it serves as a winemaking museum and is considered an asset of special cultural interest. Visits are possible on the last Saturday of each month by prior reservation. Plan around this monthly date and book in advance. Several underground wine cellars have also been preserved on the outskirts of Zuzones; some have an integrated wine-press room. Unlike the wine press, which now serves as a museum, the cellars are chiefly characterized by their underground construction and, in some cases, their wine-press rooms. A media report dated November 17, 2021, described the Lagar de Zuzones as more than 150 years old. The wine press is dated to 1850, whereas the age given for the Lagar refers to the report’s publication date in 2021.

Historical traces and feast days

Late Roman remains known as La Fernosa have been found near Zuzones. A temple in Zuzones was built in the mid-13th century on the initiative of Abbot D. Mateo González. These two references point to different historical periods: late antique finds on the one hand and a medieval building on the other. The town’s history therefore extends beyond winemaking.

The feast days also provide useful guidance when planning a trip. On November 11, Zuzones celebrates the main feast day in honor of its patron saint, San Martín de Tours, with a traditional Mass and a late-night verbena. On June 13, a Mass is celebrated in honor of Saint Anthony of Padua. San Martín de Tours is therefore both the name of the church and the patron saint of the November festival. The dates differ in both timing and occasion: the patron saint’s festival, with Mass and a verbena, is the focus in November, while the June Mass is dedicated to San Antonio. If you are planning your trip around a celebration, check the event dates in advance.
