Las Navas De Riofrío lies at the foot of the Segovian side of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The town combines a varied landscape with a cultural heritage shaped by sheep shearing, religious buildings and local festivals.

Cultural History and Buildings

The Palacio de Riofrío was built at the behest of Isabel de Farnesio: after the death of Felipe V, she commissioned the palace. It houses collections of paintings, sculptures and furniture. There is also a hunting museum with dioramas depicting game animals in their respective habitats. The exhibits on display may change.

The Church of the Virgen de la Inmaculada Concepción is a historically significant place with a Romanesque portal. A local legend says the portal came from a hermitage in Cepones. The Ermita de San Antolín is also part of the town’s architectural history: the Brotherhood of San Antolín was founded in 1608, and the hermitage was built in 1733.

Sheep Shearing as a Historical Theme

The tradition of sheep shearing in Las Navas De Riofrío dates back to the early Middle Ages. The town was a centre for this work and also a stopping place for flocks of sheep. In the later 18th century, Las Navillas was an important shearing site for transhumant flocks and had several shearing yards or sheds. This history can also be traced through the ruins of the El Charcón washing facility: they are classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural and preserve the remains of two shearing facilities. A total of 43,000 sheep sheared in 1752 are cited in connection with the El Charcón shearing facilities.

Festivals and Recurring Events

The festival of the Inmaculada Concepción includes a procession to the Virgen de la Nava and the traditional auction of processional staffs. The local festival is celebrated on 8 December. San Antolín is celebrated on 2 September. If you want to plan your trip around one of these festivals, check the dates for the relevant year.

Forest, Protected Area and Trails

The Bosque de Riofrío lies between the towns of Madrona, Hontoria, Revenga, Navas de Ríofrío and La Losa. It comprises four ecosystems: holm oak woodland, juniper woodland, Pyrenean oak woodland and ash woodland. The forest is also included in the Natura 2000 network as a Site of Community Importance. Alongside its location at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama, this gives the landscape a clearly defined ecological status.

The forest has a designated recreational area of about five hectares, with a viewpoint, signs, benches and tables. The Senda del Mirador passes through two recreational areas. It is freely accessible during the opening hours of the Palacio de Riofrío. As opening hours may change, check them before your visit.

Another route is the Ruta Urbana Pequeños Exploradores – La Ruta de Las Caceras. It starts at the Ermita de San Antolín; the Cacera del Navero runs by the hermitage. Along the way, the route passes old washing places where older villagers used to wash their laundry on stone slabs. The route may change due to local maintenance, so check the route before setting out.
