The Thursday market, local history and routes along the Órbigo reveal different sides of Benavides de Órbigo. When planning your stay, it is worth distinguishing the weekly market day from the festival dates and the different route details.

Markets and Festivals Throughout the Year

Since King Fernando IV granted Benavides market rights in 1306, a market has been held there every Thursday. The market day recurs weekly; by contrast, the Feria del Dulce y la Repostería takes place on the first weekend of September. The patron saint festivals in honour of the Bendito Cristo de la Vera Cruz are held on 14 and 15 September, and the Fiestas del Barrio de San Juan in mid-June. The timing for a market visit therefore differs from the dates for a stay centred on a particular festival. If you are travelling for a festival, check its dates before departure.

Churches and Historical Traces

The Church of San Martín de Tours stands at the heart of the town’s layout. It was built between 1761 and 1764 and is distinguished by its imposing tower. After the confiscation of church property, residents of Benavides founded the Ermita del Bendito Cristo de la Vera Cruz and continued the worship there.

The Franciscan monastery forms another chapter in the town’s history. Founded by the Counts of Luna in 1460, it disappeared after the expropriations carried out during the confiscations. There was also historically a pilgrims’ hospital that worked with the hospitals in Santa Marina del Rey. Benavides was also the centre of an ancient, extensive jurisdiction in which successive Counts of Luna exercised their seigneurial rights.

Vía Künig and Ruta del Órbigo

On section 02 of the Vía Künig, the route crosses the Órbigo via a pedestrian crossing, leads to Benavides and runs along the left bank of the river between fields of maize, hops, wheat, beans and potatoes. On arrival, it follows the cobbled Mühlenweg to the Fuente de los Ocho Caños. The fountain stands opposite the town hall and is considered one of the symbols of Benavides. There is also a restored mill on the stone bridge in Benavides.

Section 03 of the Vía Künig runs from Benavides de Órbigo to Villamejil, takes 3 hours and 21 minutes, and is rated difficulty level 1 out of 5. Time and difficulty are two separate planning details: the duration indicates the time required for the stage, while the rating of 1 out of 5 indicates its difficulty.

Benavides de Órbigo is also part of the Ruta del Órbigo. Between nearby towns, parts of this route can be explored on foot or by bicycle; motorised transport is recommended for the complete route. The recommendation to walk or cycle therefore applies to individual sections, not the entire route.
