Discover Bermellar
Accommodation in Bermellar
Bermellar’s archaeological sites, historic buildings and the Huebra landscape take center stage. Castro de El Puerto, Las Arañas and Las Merchanas offer different points of historical interest. This selection is complemented by Puente Resbala, the parish church of Santa MarĂa Magdalena and the rock paintings at Risco de Bermellar. When planning your trip, it is important to consider not only the sites’ themes but also their exact locations and the directions for reaching them.
Castros and historical periods
Castro de El Puerto dates to around 500 BC; its remains bear witness to Iron Age settlement in Bermellar. The archaeological site of Las Arañas shows that settlement continued into Roman times. The two sites offer different points of reference for understanding the area’s history: El Puerto is associated with an approximate Iron Age date, while Las Arañas indicates the continuation of settlement in Roman times.
Castro de Las Merchanas: location and access
Castro de Las Merchanas lies on the border with the municipality of Bermellar, in the Arribes del Duero Natural Park. From the village, take the CV-16 road towards Bermellar; at kilometre 4, turn right onto a signposted track. After driving 2.4 km, the final 700 m to the entrance must be covered on foot. Allow for this final walk when planning your visit. The turnoff and the walk describe different parts of the route: following the road and covering the final stretch to the entrance.
River landscape and other sights
The Arribes del Yeltes/Huebra are two kilometres from Bermellar. Puente Resbala crosses the Huebra, and grain mills have been preserved by the bridge. The site therefore offers a look at both the river crossing and the mills. Castro de El Castillo de Saldañuela is in the municipality of Bermellar, on the opposite bank of the Huebra from El Castillo. Here, too, the river provides a specific geographical reference for another archaeological site.
Bermellar’s other sights include the parish church of Santa MarĂa Magdalena and the rock paintings at Risco de Bermellar. These broaden the selection beyond castros and archaeological sites to include different forms of culture: a religious site and rock art.
A described route along the Huebra
An excursion description dated 25 April 2021 places a stretch along the Huebra between the area around Castro de Bermellar and a point close to the former settlement or “Castillo” of Malgarrida. The described route along the Huebra by Castro de Bermellar is rated as highly difficult, and the terrain is varied. These are different considerations when planning: access to Las Merchanas includes a final walk, while the description of the Huebra route focuses primarily on its course and difficulty rating.
