Cármenes combines circular hikes with local history and a route that passes through several towns before reaching Puerto de Piedrafita. During your stay, you can choose between the circular routes, historic buildings in the town, and traces of landscape and history at the Puerto. The routes differ in their starting points, destinations, stated distances and difficulty levels; the Cordel, by contrast, is defined by the sequence of towns it passes through.

Hiking and Routes Around Cármenes

The circular hike to the La Profunda and La Divina Providencia mines starts in Cármenes. It follows a 4 km track to Collado de La Profunda. A second circular hike starts in town at the Church of San Martín and is of moderate difficulty. The two routes offer different points of reference when choosing: the mine hike focuses on its destination and track section, while the other is defined by its starting point and difficulty level.

The Cordel de Cármenes passes through Rodillazo, Gete, Getino, Cármenes, Villanueva, Pontedo and Piornedo, and finally ends at Puerto de Piedrafita. The sequence of towns makes the route through several stops easy to follow: Cármenes is one section among several, while the Puerto is the named endpoint. The Cordel therefore offers a different way to find your bearings from the two circular hikes that start in town.

Buildings and Local History

The church in Cármenes was built in the 20th century. The rectory dates from the 18th century and is designed in the Baroque style. This brings together buildings from different periods; for the rectory, its style is also specified in addition to its century. Construction date and style describe two different characteristics.

Cármenes is also home to the Molino del Fraile mill and the Fragua del Fraile forge. Several fountains add to the town’s history, including one bearing a coat of arms. The Caserón Noble de Cármenes is connected with the area’s long history. From the church and rectory to the mill, forge and fountains, a variety of architectural themes come into view; the Caserón adds its own connection to the history of the area.
