Castrocontrigo lies on the banks of the Eria. The landscape around the town combines rye fields with holm oaks, oaks and resin-producing pine forests. The river also shapes how you find your way around: it features in both the landscape and the town’s history. Castrocontrigo therefore offers points of interest for a stay focused on nature, archaeological remains and regional traditions.

On the Eria: Landscape and Fishing

The Manzaneda fishing reserve covers a five-kilometre stretch of the Eria. It runs downstream from the old bridge at Villar del Monte to the mouth of the tributary Río Pequeño in the centre of Castrocontrigo. If you plan to fish, check permits, the season and applicable regulations in advance, as these may change. The specific stretch of river helps you locate the fishing reserve; the conditions in force at the time remain essential to your plans.

Roman Remains by the River and on Cerro del Castro

The Roman bridge over the Eria lies on the Roman road from Castrocontrigo to Corporales. Cerro del Castro is also an important historical landmark: the pre-Roman settlement of Aria, with which Castrocontrigo is associated, stood on the hill now known by that name. After the Roman conquest of the valley of Aria, a Roman camp was built on the plain between the hill and the river. The bridge, hill and river each have their own connection to the history of the area.

A cross was erected at the summit of Cerro del Castro to commemorate Doña Urraca and her son Alfonso Raimúndez’s victory over the Portuguese. The large cross symbolises Doña Urraca, and the small one her son. To find the archaeological site of El Castro, access begins south of the town centre on Camino del Vía Crucis, which branches off C-622; after about 250 metres, you will reach the site.

Chocolate Making and Mills

The Museo del Chocolate features traditional machinery and detailed explanations of the chocolate-making process. Grain is ground in a mill made of heated granite stones. The machinery and description of the process offer different insights: one shows traditional techniques, while the other explains the production process.

The mills in Castrocontrigo also help visitors better understand the history and life of the villages. They complement the focus on chocolate making with another topic concerned with local life. If you are interested in technical processes or the historical development of village life, you will find different points of interest here, as the two topics tell different stories.

Birdlife and Protected Area

A total of 187 terrestrial vertebrate species have been recorded in the Castrocontrigo area: 122 bird species, 42 mammal species, 13 reptile species and 10 amphibian species. The municipality of Castrocontrigo currently has ZEPA status as a special protection area for birds. If you would like to take this protected status into account when planning your trip, please check the official regulations in force before travelling.

Traditions and Regional Cuisine

The San Isidro tradition in Castrocontrigo includes a procession to the Cruz de los Frutos and the blessing of the fields on 15 May. The San Salvador festival is associated with 6 August. If you would like to plan your trip around these dates, check the latest event dates in advance. This allows you to take the dates mentioned into account without treating them as confirmation of a current festival programme.

Alubias a la bañezana and frog legs are also associated with Castrocontrigo; both are part of the regional cuisine of the comarca and the province of León. These dishes offer another insight into the area’s culinary identity. Together with chocolate making, they showcase different aspects of local food culture.
