Sariegos: Hiking, Culture and Nature
Accommodation in Sariegos
During a stay in Sariegos, you can explore hiking trails, nature and traces of history as different points of interest. The trails begin in various parts of the municipality. There are also routes linked to the Camino de San Salvador, opportunities to observe nature in the surrounding area, and the Mayos tradition, celebrated in spring.
Hiking Trails and Scenery
The Ruta de las Fuentes is a circular trail focused on the many springs scattered between the two valleys it crosses. It also offers views of the Bernesga Valley and the city of León. For hikers, the route combines a nature-focused theme with panoramic views of the valley and city.
Another route offering panoramic views is the Ruta de los Llanos, in the municipality of Sariegos, in Pobladura del Bernesga. It offers panoramic views of Sariegos, León and the Bernesga Valley. In Carbajal de la Legua, the Ruta de los Miradores follows the same route as the Camino de San Salvador for part of the way. A section of this Camino passes through oak and holm oak forests in Carbajal de la Legua. The routes therefore offer different highlights: the Ruta de los Llanos focuses on views, while the Ruta de los Miradores partly shares its route with the Camino de San Salvador.
Monte San Isidro lies in the wider area around Sariegos; a small northern section falls within the municipality. People from León and nearby towns use the mountain for recreation and nature observation. For visitors interested in observing nature, the landscape extends beyond the individual named hiking trails.
Heritage and Traditions
A Roman aqueduct is located at Paraje de La Griega in Carbajal de la Legua, within the municipality of Sariegos. Only a few remains of the Benedictine monastery of Santa María de Carbajal, which was in operation from the 16th century, survive in Carbajal. The aqueduct and monastery ruins offer two different points of historical interest in the area.
A Roman camp is located in the El Castillo area, about 500 metres from Sariegos. It was initially dated to the period from the 1st century BC to the 1st century AD. The medieval bridge La Pontona is at the entrance to Sariegos and crosses the Bernesga dam. It may once have served as a crossing for residents travelling towards León. It can be seen near the CL-623, opposite the entrance to the Pasarela de Sariegos. On 16 March 2021, it was described as difficult to reach and unusable because of its condition. Check the situation locally before visiting.
The Mayos tradition is celebrated in Sariegos as an established, recurring spring custom. This adds a seasonal cultural dimension to the hiking and history-related activities. If you would like to include this tradition in your travel plans, spring is the best time to visit.
