Toreno: Hiking Routes, Rock Art and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Toreno
The Sil River crosses the entire municipality of Toreno from north to south. At the same time, the highest peak in the Sierra de Gistredo is visible from almost anywhere in the municipality. The landscape is characterised by mountainous and mid-mountain terrain. During a stay in Toreno, you can therefore choose from different themes, including experiences in nature, routes and cultural heritage.
Hiking and Mountain Biking in Toreno
Toreno has numerous easily accessible, well-marked hiking and mountain biking routes. The routes described here showcase different landscapes: the La Viñuela route runs from Toreno to Villar de las Traviesas through old mining areas. On the return journey to Toreno, it follows the valley of the Velasco River and passes dense oak forests.
A route between Matarrosa and Librán includes a waterfall and rock art sites on the stretch between San Pedro and Librán. The route from Santa Marina del Sil leads to the Bárcena Reservoir and Puente Cantarín; on the return journey, the Sil remains in view. The differences between the routes are clear: La Viñuela features mining, a valley and oak forest; the route between Matarrosa and Librán features a waterfall and rock art sites; and the route from Santa Marina features a reservoir, a bridge and views of the Sil.
A 52-kilometre mountain biking stage follows tracks and passes through villages such as Igüeña; it also runs close to Villar de las Traviesas. Alongside the many hiking routes, you will also find a stage with a specified distance to include in your mountain biking plans. Conditions on individual routes can change; check in advance if you are planning a particular route.
Rock Art and Sights
The Buracón de los Mouros is located in the gorge of the Primout River near Librán and is considered the best-known and most significant rock art site in the area. The rock art complex of San Pedro Mallo near La Cueva also has its own historical significance: it includes schematic Bronze Age rock paintings and lies above the Camino Real to Librán. The area's rock art consists mainly of anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures, as well as numerous engravings that are difficult to interpret.
Those interested in different types of historic buildings will find the parish church of San Juan Bautista, the medieval Picota, the Casa de las Secretarias, a distinguished manor house, and the bridge over the Sil, described as Roman, in Toreno. A Roman road leads to Villar de las Traviesas, where you can visit the Ermita de San Lorenzo and the Iglesia de Santiago Apostol. The cultural attractions therefore include both rock art sites and named buildings and sights.
