Vegacervera draws attention to a landscape shaped by limestone and the Torío River. The Hoces de Vegacervera, the forests on its slopes and the caving activities at Cueva de Valporquero are key considerations when planning a trip. The natural scenery is complemented by the annual Fiesta de la Cecina de Chivo.

Gorge, River and Forest

The Hoces de Vegacervera lie along the middle course of the Torío River, within the municipalities of Vegacervera and Cármenes. The river has carved the gorge into Mesozoic limestone. It is nearly 500 m deep and no more than 15 m wide at its base. Its depth and narrow base give it the character of a deeply incised gorge.

Oak and beech forests grow on the slopes, while the valley floor is home to a riparian forest of willows and poplars. The wooded slopes thus differ markedly from the vegetation on the valley floor. The Hoces de Vegacervera are designated as a protected natural area. The designation is based on Decree 94/2004 of 26 August, published on 1 September in the B.O.C.y L.

The best way to access the Hayedo de Valporquero is from the car park at the entrance to Cueva de Valporquero. Seasonal conditions can affect the walk, so take them into account when planning your visit.

Cave Visits and Climbing

Cueva de Valporquero is 3,498 m long. The tourist visit takes in seven named chambers and galleries and is conducted in groups accompanied by a cave guide. Check the visiting arrangements before your trip. The Curso de Aguas de Valporquero is a different experience: access allows for a caving traverse through galleries and waterfalls that have not been artificially developed for visitors. Availability and requirements may change; check in advance with an authorised active-tourism provider.

The climbing routes in the Hoces de Vegacervera also vary in technical difficulty, ranging from climbs suitable for beginners to technically demanding routes. Alongside guided cave visits and caving traverses, they offer another option with a distinct focus.

Fiesta de la Cecina de Chivo

The Fiesta de la Cecina de Chivo is held every year in Vegacervera. In 2023, the celebration was recognised as an event of provincial tourist interest. At the festival, visitors can buy Cecina de Chivo and sample goat soup, preñaos filled with goat sausage, spirits, pastries and wine. The event thus combines an annual occasion with a specific culinary programme. Dates and offerings may vary.

Getting to Cueva de Valporquero

The road journey from León to Cueva de Valporquero follows the LE-311 to Matallana de Torío, then the LE-315 to Felmín, and finally a local road to the cave car park. Check current road conditions before setting off. This route can be planned using the road sequence given, without assuming a particular journey time.
