Villaverde de Sandoval brings together the history of a Cistercian monastery, the French Way and the present-day use of a monastery building for contemporary art. The town lies on the right bank of the Esla. In the 2000 legal demarcation of the French Way—the French route of the Camino de Santiago—Villaverde de Sandoval is listed as one of the places the route passes through. When planning your trip, you can choose to focus on the monastery’s history, its later use for art, or the spiritual significance of the Camino de Santiago.

The Monastery of Santa MarĂa de Sandoval

The Monastery of Santa María de Sandoval is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC) in the Monument category. It was built during the 12th and 13th centuries and is considered an example of Late Romanesque architecture in transition to Gothic. In 1142, Alfonso VII gave the lands on which the monastery was built to Count Pedro Ponce de Minerva and his wife, Estefanía Ramírez. In 1167, the count handed them over to the monks of La Espina Monastery to build another monastery. The two dates mark different steps: first the gift to the count and his wife, then the transfer to the monks.

The monastery contains the founders’ sarcophagi, as well as various carvings from the 16th and 17th centuries. This places memorials to the founders alongside works of art from later centuries. When considering the site’s cultural history, you can distinguish between its medieval construction and the later-dated carvings.

La Panera and the arts

La Panera, a building erected in 1789 during the 18th century, is part of the Cistercian monastery’s ancillary complex. Today it is used as a rural exhibition space for contemporary art. It features works from the Instituto Leonés de Cultura collection, as well as works by local, national and international artists. The exhibitions add another perspective to the monastery’s history: alongside the protected architecture is a space for contemporary art featuring contributions from different backgrounds.

Choral singing and seasonal events

The VĂsperas singing takes place at the Monastery of Santa MarĂa de Villaverde de Sandoval on the first Sunday of each month from May to October at 1:15 p.m. Check the annual program before your trip if you want to plan around this event.

Another cultural highlight is the Belén Concejil de Villaverde de Sandoval. A report on the 2024 Christmas season located the nativity scene inside the church of the old monastery and reported that it had been expanded to include more than 100 handmade figures. They depict real people from the village and wear their own clothes. Check before your trip whether and when the nativity scene will be displayed again. The timing of the two events differs: the Vísperas singing is scheduled during a period from May to October, while the report about the nativity scene refers to the 2024 Christmas season.

Choose your travel dates based on what you want to see

When searching for a hotel in Villaverde de Sandoval, your reason for visiting is a useful starting point. A stay focused on the monastery and La Panera is different from a trip scheduled around the choral singing or a possible future display of the nativity scene. If an event date is important to you, confirm it before booking. This lets you match your travel dates to your interests without equating the town’s historical significance with a single event.
