Ampudia lies in the region known as Tierra de Campos and is considered an example of typical Castilian architecture and urban layout. The town combines a historically shaped streetscape with sacred art, museums and festivals. Its historic centre was declared a historic-artistic ensemble in 1965. Those interested in history and architectural styles will find a range of examples, from arcades and a castle to a historic organ and rural buildings.

The Castle and Arcades in the Townscape

Castillo de Ampudia is an example of a Castilian lord’s castle, dating from the 15th century to the first decades of the 16th century. The main streets, Corredera and Ontiveros, offer a different architectural highlight. They retain arcades with stone columns dating from the 17th century; some examples date back to the 13th century. The buildings mentioned therefore span a period from medieval arcades to a castle from the early modern period.

Churches, Organ and Chapel

The Collegiate Church of San Miguel is easily recognisable from afar by its 63-metre-high tower, known locally as the Giralda de Campos. The church also houses a Baroque organ built by Tadeo Ortega in 1779. The Ermita de la Virgen del Castrillo adds several clearly dated stages to this architectural history: it was rebuilt between 1621 and 1626, its porch was added in 1648, and it was partially restored in 2002. Together, these buildings offer different points of interest for a focus on sacred architecture and its history.

Sacred Art and the History of Medicine

The Museum of Sacred Art mainly houses works dating from the 12th to the 18th century. It is located in the former 17th-century Franciscan convent of San Francisco. The surviving church features late Renaissance architecture and Mudéjar decoration. The collection, former convent and church thus bring together works of art and a historic architectural ensemble whose individual elements reflect different periods and styles.

The history of medicine is another museum theme. The Museo de la Medicina is housed in a historic building. It displays more than 200 items assembled by the Official Medical Association of Palencia through donations from former members. Ampudia’s cultural offerings thus range from sacred collections to a collection devoted to the history of medicine.

Landscape and Rural Architectural Heritage

Ampudia’s municipal area is shaped by three main landscape features: páramos or alcores, campiñas and cuestas. This description refers to the municipal area, not just the built-up town centre. Rural building types include the chozos of Ampudia: single-storey, round stone buildings with a conical shape and a single interior space. Shepherds used them as shelters and, in some cases, as accommodation. Their form and former use differ distinctly from the churches, castle and arcades in the townscape.

Festivals and Planning Your Visit

The festival of the Virgen del Castrillo is still celebrated on the last Sunday in July. The former procession no longer takes place, and the specific programme may vary from year to year. In August, Ampudia hosts a festival of paloteo and dance, dedicated to preserving the traditional paloteo dance. The “Recorridos Secretos” at Castillo de Ampudia last almost two and a half hours and provide access to the keep and dungeons; you can take the duration into account when planning your day.

When looking for a hotel in Ampudia, you can first decide what you want to focus on during your trip: the townscape and architectural history, sacred art or a festival date.
