Discover Guardo
Accommodation in Guardo
Guardo lies at an altitude of around 1,100 metres in the Carrión Valley, on the southern side of the final foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains. The destination brings together striking reminders of local history, hiking routes, a riverside park and an urban hydrothermal centre. If you are planning a stay, here are several themes to help you shape your plans for Guardo.
Valley, mountain ranges and views
The natural areas around Guardo include forests of oaks, holm oaks and junipers. From the Mirador Villa de Guardo, you can see the various neighbourhoods, the old town and the modern town. You can also see the transition between rocky limestone mountains and wooded slopes with native tree species. The viewpoint thus combines views of the town’s layout with the surrounding landscape.
Parque Fuentes Carrionas is also part of the townscape: it is Guardo’s largest urban green space and lies on the banks of the Carrión. Its attractions include activities for children and a pond with geese, ducks and swans. The park and the viewpoint show two different ways of experiencing the landscape: the riverside green space on one hand, and views of neighbourhoods and mountain ranges on the other.
Monuments and architecture
The Monumento al Minero commemorates mining and honours miners. It was erected on 14 July 1975 as an architectural ensemble. It includes a four-metre-high bronze monolith by sculptor Jacinto Higueras Cátedra. The monument gives mining a tangible place in the townscape.
At the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista, different periods of construction come together: the church features 16th-century Flamboyant Gothic architecture while also preserving the Romanesque baptismal font from an earlier 13th-century temple. La Casa Grande, the Palacio del Arzobispo Bullón, is an 18th-century palace with Neoclassical and Baroque elements. It is designated a BIC (Bien de Interés Cultural, Asset of Cultural Interest).
The ruins of the Castillo de Guardo are the remains of a 9th-century fortification. It was used to monitor troop movements along the routes through Guardo and the four valleys of Valdecastro, Valdelera, Corcos and San Miguel. Another cultural feature of the town is the urban route of murals. A map shows the locations of murals that can be visited in Guardo’s streets.
Every year on 10 July, a celebration is held at the San Cristóbal Chapel in honour of the patron saint of transport workers. Its fixed date sets this annual tradition apart from the town’s permanent buildings and monuments.
Routes for different travel plans
The Sendas de Leyenda comprise six circular routes of medium and long distance. They pass through Monte Corcos, Valdecastro, Peña Mayor, Peñica Blanca, Balcón de Judas, Alto de la Orca and Campos de la Peña. As the route network may be revised, check the current routes before setting out.
Two other routes are also connected to Guardo, but follow different courses: the Trilogía de Valdehaya mountain-biking route starts and finishes in town. The Camino Olvidado to Santiago connects Bilbao with Villafranca del Bierzo in León and passes through Guardo. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between circular routes, a route that starts and ends in Guardo, and a longer trail with endpoints farther apart.
Hydrothermal centre and regional cuisine
The urban hydrothermal centre features experience showers and a cascade, a foot bath, Finnish, steam and Turkish saunas, a whirlpool, heated loungers and an activity pool. It also has a circuit with different water jets and bubbles, two more cascades, pools at different temperatures and a relaxation area. Check opening status and access conditions before visiting.
The Olla Ferroviaria, which Guardo is known for preparing, is a local culinary highlight. Along with the murals, historic buildings and routes, it adds a local flavour to the natural and cultural attractions. You can explore these themes individually or use them as different focal points for your stay in Guardo.
