Monzón de Campos can be reached via exit 21 of the A-67; Palencia is about 15 kilometers away. Check current traffic conditions before setting out. The town is part of Tierra de Campos, a landscape shaped by plains and hills that offers a variety of routes. History, architecture and trails through the landscape provide different focuses for planning your trip.

Church, Castillo and bridge

Iglesia del Salvador is in the town center. Its construction history includes a late Romanesque phase from the 12th century and a later phase from the 15th century. The church houses the Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles altarpiece from the 15th century: it comprises 14 paintings in the Hispano-Flemish tradition and a figure of the Virgin attributed to Rodrigo de León or Alejo de Vahía. The burial place of the Counts of Monzón was also established in Iglesia del Salvador.

Castillo de Monzón de Campos stands on a hill overlooking the town. In 1109, the wedding celebrations of Queen Urraca and Alfonso the Battler, King of Aragon, were held at Castillo de Monzón. An official announcement dated July 31, 2026, reported the start of the Castillo’s transformation into a large, multifunctional cultural center. If you plan to visit the castle, check current visitor information in advance.

The bridge over the Carrión also has a long history: the present-day bridge may date back to the mid-16th century. By the late 18th century, the bridge at Monzón was a royal crossing and essential for transporting building materials for the Canal de Castilla. A toll levied by Count Altamira was also paid there. The Camino Real runs through the Monzón de Campos area.

Landscape and routes

The Castellones lie north of the town. Erosion has shaped an almost vertical cliff there, about 50 meters high; it is located at the site of a former castle dating from the 10th century. On a walk around the Castellones, the trail passes a cliff where several birds of prey nest. Sightings are seasonal and are not guaranteed on every visit.

A 2012 municipal guide describes the first section of a route as a four-kilometer stretch along the wooded banks of the Carrión and past cultivated fields. The guide also describes an initial route through the Vegas y Páramos del Camino Real: it starts in the town center of Monzón and leads to the old bridge over the Carrión. Before setting out, check the route, trail surface and local conditions.

The Canal de Castilla runs a few meters from the municipal boundary of Monzón de Campos. This setting is distinct from the routes along the Carrión: the two landscapes offer different starting points for planning your trip around riverside scenery, trails or the surrounding region.

Festival and local specialty

The medieval festival La Condal takes place on the second-to-last weekend in August and includes a medieval market. It has been celebrated since 2002. If your trip falls during this period, check the specific program dates for that year in advance.

The traditional Carajillo de Monzón is also part of the town’s local character: an artisan liqueur made from orujo and coffee. Along with the historic buildings and routes described here, this specialty adds to the picture of a place whose cultural and natural attractions can be explored in different ways.
