Routes and side trips in Prádanos de Ojeda

The Camino Lebaniego Castellano passes through Prádanos de Ojeda, as does the Camino Natural del Románico Palentino. One specific route tip comes from the Ruta del Carbón de Cok, which recommends short side trips to Plaza del Corazón de Jesús and Iglesia Parroquial de San Cristóbal. If you are looking for route suggestions that include named cultural attractions, you will find two expressly recommended stops here.

Churches and their architectural history

Of the abandoned settlement of San Jorde in the municipality of Prádanos de Ojeda, only the church remains. The small building has a single-nave hall, a western bell gable and a rectangular-ended chancel. On the outside of the southern apse is a row of carved corbels depicting human figures and fantastical animals. This brings together two distinct architectural features: the floor plan and the figurative decoration.

Iglesia Parroquial de San Cristóbal is also listed as a stop on the Ruta del Carbón de Cok. Its current building phase is dated to the 16th and 17th centuries; at the same time, the church preserves two Romanesque capitals in its triumphal arch. The contrast between the later building phase and the Romanesque capitals offers a specific view of different periods within the same building.

Ermita de San Pedro stands in Plaza Mayor, beside the town hall and Torre del Reloj. Plaza Mayor has two levels. The stone-built chapel has a round-arched entrance and a single-arch bell gable. Inside are a wooden choir and several works of art: a 14th-century Gothic sculpture of Saint Ramón, a Madonna and Child from the same century, a 16th-century depiction of Saint Peter and a 17th-century altarpiece. The dates make clear that these works were created at different times.

Historical traces and feast day

On Calle del Hospital, the Mesón, next to the bodega and the former Fielato, remains as evidence of Prádanos de Ojeda’s historical trading and through-traffic activity. Fuente del Arrabal also has a detail handed down through the years: its washhouse is still there.

The feast in honour of Saint Christopher takes place on 10 July, with Masses, processions, games and open-air dances. If you would like to plan your trip around this occasion, check the specific dates for the year you have in mind.
