Aldeagutiérrez is included on the list of dehesas in Ledesma. If you want to plan your trip around culture, cycling or water activities, Ledesma offers several options to consider. When choosing a hotel, you can compare these themes with your own travel dates and interests.

Heritage and townscape in Ledesma

The Church of Santa María la Mayor is considered one of the outstanding examples of Hispano-Flemish Gothic architecture in the province of Salamanca. In 2002, it was declared a Bien de Interés Cultural. The church also houses the tomb of Don Sancho, a grandson of Alfonso X of Castile. The architecture and the tomb thus offer two different reasons to explore the history of the building.

Much of the town wall is made of granite. Of the eight historic gates, only the Puerta de los Mártires remains today; it is also known as San Nicolás and Caldereros. Another way to explore the town is the circular route through Ledesma, marked by streets and buildings. Its circular shape sets it apart from a single sightseeing destination.

The Bletisa Centre presents the town’s history from prehistory to the modern age. Audiovisual and interactive features accompany this broad sweep through time. A bridge also offers a tangible historical connection: the Puente de Peñaserracín may be of Roman origin. It spans the Rivera de Fuentes Luengas, is 51 metres long and 3.75 metres wide, and is still passable.

Cycling routes, river and landscape

There are different route descriptions to choose from for cycling trips. The Centro BTT de Ledesma comprises a network of 100 kilometres of marked trails, divided into five signposted routes of varying difficulty. The Camino de Tajurmientos is designated as an easy circular mountain-biking route. It passes through dehesa landscapes and past cattle farms whose main activity is breeding fighting bulls.

Another route is the Playa de Carnaceda. It follows the banks of the Tormes and partly passes through the Natura 2000 site protected as LIC Riberas del río Tormes y afluentes. Along the way, it passes Playa de Carnaceda and ends at the former watermill, Aceña de Pedro Álvaro. This route description links a named riverside place with a historic endpoint; the mill is specifically described as a former watermill.

The Tormes at Ledesma offers opportunities for canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding, including on calm stretches of water that resemble a lake. If you plan to take part in either activity, check the current arrangements before your trip. This lets you consider river activities as a focus in their own right, rather than treating them as the same as the information about cycling routes.

Festivities and a local speciality

The main Corpus Christi celebrations take place in Ledesma in June, last seven days and include the bull runs known as “Espantos”. As individual events may vary, it is advisable to check the dates and programme for your specific plans.

The well-known Rosquillas de Ledesma are made at two pastry shops in Ledesma. You can take part in making them by booking in advance. If you would like to include this in your plans, ask about an appointment beforehand.

Another regional route connection

The Way of Saint Francis of Assisi enters the province of Salamanca via the medieval Puente Mocho bridge near Ledesma. It then heads southeast through oak groves and areas where fighting bulls are bred, continuing as far as Ciudad Rodrigo. This route offers a different geographical perspective from the circular route through the town: it describes the way into the province and the onward route towards Ciudad Rodrigo, without specifying a walking time or distance.
