Cristóbal lies on the border between the Sierra de Béjar and the Sierra de Francia. The town offers several specific highlights to help you plan your trip: MTB circuits of varying lengths and difficulty levels, diverse architecture and recurring festivals throughout the year.

Nature and Trails around Cristóbal

The forests around Cristóbal consist mainly of chestnut and oak trees; ash and holm oaks are also found here. Cristóbal’s natural environment provides shelter for numerous wild species and supports a rich, extensive flora. The otter has returned to the Sangusín River and streams such as the Valhondo, Pinosa and Chorreras. Walkers can discover traces of earlier civilisations on the trails around the town.

MTB Routes of Varying Distances

The Ruta BTT Entresierras 1 is a circular route of around ten kilometres with a moderate difficulty level. A longer, more challenging option is the Ruta BTT Entresierras 2: it covers around 20.5 kilometres, starts and ends in Cristóbal, and passes through vineyards within the D.O.P. “Sierra de Salamanca”. At 32 kilometres, the Ruta BTT de los Dos Valles is also challenging. This circular route connects Cristóbal with Valdefuentes de Sangusín, San Esteban de la Sierra and Santibáñez de la Sierra, and passes through the Sangusín and Alagón valleys.

The Centro BTT Entresierras is housed in Cristóbal’s former school buildings and has changing rooms, showers and tools for minor repairs. It also connects Cristóbal to a 183-kilometre cycling route, divided into nine sections within the Reserva de la Biosfera Sierras de Béjar y Francia. If you plan to use the centre’s facilities, check their current availability in advance. Trail conditions can also change, so take this into account when planning your route.

Church, Architectural Styles and Local Landmarks

The parish church of San Martín de Tours contains elements from various periods, most of them dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Its main chapel has a 16th-century Mudéjar coffered ceiling. Zoomorphic figures adorn the cornices; locals interpret them as wolves. This local interpretation earned Cristóbal the nickname “pueblo de los lobos” (village of the wolves).

Traditional houses also reflect the town’s established architectural style. They have two levels: animals were once kept on the lower floor, while the upper floor served as living quarters. On the edge of town stands the Ermita del Humilladero, also known as the Ermita del Cristo de la Pasión; it is considered one of Cristóbal’s most important buildings. The different architectural styles give visits to the church and the townscape their own distinct cultural significance.

Festivals and Regional Traditions

The festival of the patron saint, the Santísimo Cristo, takes place in September. It includes a procession from the hermitage to the church and back. On 11 November, a mass and a communal meal are held in honour of San Martín de Tours. The main dish is chopped or stewed pork. Each year, the traditional cloak of Cristóbal is also exchanged with representatives from other nearby towns during the celebration.

The Fiesta del Emigrante takes place in mid-August. It was established for the holiday season, when many residents who have moved away return to Cristóbal. Another food and festival tradition is Lunes de Aguas with hornazo on Easter Sunday: hornazos are eaten outdoors with friends and acquaintances. These occasions take place throughout the year and differ in both their activities and their connection to the community.

Cristóbal is a member of the Asociación Ruta del Vino Sierra de Francia. The wines promoted by the association belong to the D.O.P. Sierra de Salamanca. Along with the vineyards on the Ruta BTT Entresierras 2, they offer another regional connection, bringing together the landscape and local wine tradition.
