El Cabaco: Hiking and heritage at the foot of Peña de Francia
Accommodation in El Cabaco
El Cabaco lies in the upper basin of the Río Yeltes, at the foot of Peña de Francia. The town is part of the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park and a biosphere reserve. Mountain scenery, hiking trails and evidence of regional history offer different ways to shape your stay. From the summit of Peña de Francia, the view stretches across numerous nearby towns and across the entire Campo Charro plain. Mountain goats can also be spotted there.
Gold mining and architectural history
Las Cavenes in El Cabaco is designated a Site of Cultural Interest (Bien de Interés Cultural) in the archaeological zone category. Exhibitions at the Centro de Interpretación de la Minería Romana del Oro feature reproductions of tools, models, audiovisual materials and archaeological finds. There are also interactive games for children. Marked trails lead from the center to the former mining area, making it possible to explore the subject both through the exhibition and out on the trails.
The center also has information panels in Braille, audio guides in Spanish and English, a tour in sign language, and materials in Easy Read format. Check the specific formats available before your visit.
In El Zarzoso, within the municipality of El Cabaco, is a monastery of Franciscan nuns of the Third Order Regular of Porta Coeli. It is designated a Site of Cultural Interest in the monument category; the corresponding decision was published in 2024. The monastery church is a single-nave Gothic building dating from the 15th century. Its architectural details include simple star-rib vaults.
Peña de Francia and hiking trails
Peña de Francia is a 1,727 m-high mountain in the Sierra de Francia, in the south of Salamanca province; its summit lies within the municipality of El Cabaco. The Santuario de Nuestra Señora de la Peña de Francia stands at the summit. The summit complex includes three outdoor chapels, including the Capilla de la Blanca. The mountain, sanctuary and chapels each offer a different perspective on the area, while the view from the summit extends far across the surrounding landscape.
The El Cabaco-Peña de Francia PRSA-8 linear trail is 8.7 km long, with 760 m of ascent. The 13.7 km El Cabaco-Nava de Francia mycological trail has 220 m of elevation gain; both routes are rated moderate. A shorter, 2 km version of the mycological trail is available in the area around El Cabaco. The PRSA-8 is therefore shorter, but has more elevation gain.
The mycological trail passes through extensive holm oak dehesas, across rivers and through damp valleys, as well as through dense pine forest in the Las Batuecas-Sierra de Francia Natural Park. Along the way, it offers insights into traditional charcoal-makers’ routes and Roman gold mining. Information about the PRSA-8 may be updated, and conditions on the mycological trail may change with the seasons. Check the latest information and conditions before setting out.
Charro traditions and a visit to a farm
In El Cabaco, people uphold the tradition of wearing Charro dress with jewelry such as necklaces, earrings and collar necklaces. The men’s costume includes the botón charro, which represents a rosary with ten spherical beads. This detail complements the area’s nature and mountain attractions with a glimpse of local dress traditions.
At Finca Zarzosillo de Abajo, paths run between the individual grazing enclosures, making it easy to get around and observe the animals. Ganadería Adelaida Rodríguez offers guided farm visits for groups of two or more. Confirm bookings and operating conditions in advance.
