La Fregeneda – Camino de Hierro and the Arribes Landscape
Accommodation in La Fregeneda
La Fregeneda is a destination for travelers who want to combine a hike on the Camino de Hierro with river scenery and cultural heritage. The municipality in the province of Salamanca lies within the protected Arribes del Duero Natural Park. When planning your trip, you may therefore want to consider the route, the landscape and the town’s historic heritage.
Natural landscape between the Duero and Águeda
The Duero forms steep Arribes cliffs along the northern municipal boundary, while the Águeda does so along the southwestern boundary. La Fregeneda has a Mediterranean-continental microclimate. Almond, orange and olive trees, as well as prickly pear cacti, grow naturally here. Its location on two rivers thus shapes the scenery of this destination.
Hiking the Camino de Hierro
The Camino de Hierro passes through 20 railway tunnels and over 10 bridges. Tunnel No. 1 is more than 1.5 kilometers long; the tunnels and bridges make the former railway line the defining feature of the hike. The Camino is for hiking only. The short option is listed as a little over 9 kilometers in total. It begins within the municipality of La Fregeneda and joins the route at Puente de los Poyos. The long route starts at the old railway station.
Before setting off, visitors must have their ticket validated at the visitor reception center at the Vega Terrón quay. From there, they are taken either to the starting point of the long route at the old railway station or to the start of the short option in La Fregeneda. Factor ticket validation and the transfer into your plans. Tunnel No. 3 may be closed during certain periods because bats are hibernating and breeding; an alternative route is available in that case. Check the current route conditions before your visit.
Getting there and finding your way around
Public transport reaches the municipality of La Fregeneda; from there, it is 6.5 kilometers to the start of the Camino de Hierro at the Vega Terrón quay. From Salamanca, the road route follows the C-517 via Vitigudino and Lumbrales. From Ciudad Rodrigo, it follows the SA-324 and C-517 via Lumbrales; the N 221 is listed for travel from Portugal. If you are arriving by public transport or using these roads, check schedules, road conditions and signage in advance.
The Mafeito viewpoint is described as accessible. The river quay is also a local landmark: large river cruise ships traveling along the Douro from Porto dock there. At La Fregeneda, the Duero leaves Castile and León and, after crossing the border into Portugal, flows on calmly and remains navigable.
Church, railway and rock engravings
The Church of San Marcos Evangelista was begun in the 16th century in the Gothic style and completed in the 18th century in the Baroque style. Its construction history thus brings together two distinct periods. La Fregeneda’s cultural heritage also includes the international railway bridge on the line between La Fuente de San Esteban and Barca d’Alva.
The Arroyo de las Almas archaeological site within the municipality contains around 600 engraved motifs, dating from the Upper Paleolithic to the present day. Among the oldest engravings are 21 figurative depictions made using incision; their execution suggests a Magdalenian date. The site also includes 137 schematic engravings from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age. This broad time span and the more specifically defined groups of motifs offer different insights into the history of the area.
Almond blossom and Spanish-Portuguese ties
Día del Almendro celebrates the blossoming almond trees and the ties between Spain and Portugal. The festival has been held in La Fregeneda since the early 1960s. The 2024 edition was set to include a symbolic almond tree planting and an eco-nature fair featuring almonds and other products from both sides of the border. Dates and programs for future editions may vary; if you are interested, check the announcements for the relevant year.
