La Hoya lies in the Sierra de Béjar at an altitude of 1,242 metres above sea level. Its elevation affords views of many places in the province of Salamanca and the nearby mountains. Part of the LIC Riberas del Río Tormes y Afluentes (ES4150085) lies within the municipality. Snow activities, hiking trails and traditional architecture offer different ways to shape your stay.

Skiing and snow at Covatilla

The Estación de Esquí de la Covatilla can be reached from La Hoya. It lies within the municipality and at an altitude of over 2,000 metres. The resort offers children and adults a day of skiing in nature; seasonal availability may vary. Its snowpark has 15 features, three jump lines and three difficulty levels. The configuration may change. The Parque de Nieve offers sledging and playing in the snow. Operations and rules there may vary by season. If you are planning a visit, check the applicable conditions and seasonal availability.

Hiking trails around La Hoya

The circular route “Paseo por Vallejera de Riofrío, La Hoya y Navacarros” is 7 km long and has a low difficulty level. Another route is the long-distance GR 10 trail: it enters the province of Salamanca from San Bartolomé de Béjar in the province of Ávila and passes through the municipality of La Hoya. From the town of La Hoya, the GR 10 climbs through oak woodland to the road leading to the La Covatilla ski slopes.

The two routes offer different points of reference: the circular route has a stated length and difficulty level, while the GR 10 is described in terms of its course through the municipality and its climb from the town. This helps you choose between a 7 km circuit and the described section of a long-distance trail when planning, without conflating the two routes.

Traditional architecture and local history

Traditional architecture in La Hoya is reflected in specific building details. Large roof overhangs protect houses from snow. Large galleries with wooden balconies are used to dry cured meats. Other examples of traditional architecture feature wide stone walls and granite-block surrounds around openings and at building corners. These architectural features combine design with practical functions.

The Iglesia del Espíritu Santo is a small parish church dedicated to the Holy Spirit. La Hoya’s founding is associated with the medieval repopulation.

Getting there and other activities

Roads connect La Hoya to the former national highway from Salamanca and to the province of Ávila; the Ruta de la Plata motorway is nearby. As road conditions can change, check your route before setting off. Aventur, which offers rafting, is based in La Hoya as another active tourism option. Before making plans, confirm whether the activity is currently available.

The elevation, the circular route described here and the architectural features can help you compare the destination’s character with your plans.
