Ledrada: Heritage and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Ledrada
Ledrada combines buildings, including a predominantly Romanesque church, historic traces in the townscape and hiking trails through the landscape. This offers a range of different highlights: architecture and local life, the former railway, and nature and wildlife. The details range from a tower’s clock mechanism to panoramic views of two mountain ranges.
Buildings and traces of local life
The Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel in Ledrada is predominantly Romanesque in style. The Torre del Reloj offers a different architectural impression: the square granite tower has ashlar masonry at its four corners and consists of three sections that taper slightly towards the top. The clock is in the third section; a hipped roof and a bell tower crown the structure. The clock’s mechanism also has its own date: its weight-driven mechanism was installed in 1891.
The Ermita de la Virgen de la Yedra is a small granite religious building. Its features include ashlar masonry at the corners, two side buttresses and a tiled roof over a wooden structure. A porch supported by four granite columns complements the architecture. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands on a rock along the path to the ermita and is visible from the road into Ledrada.
Historic details can also be found in the streetscape: inscriptions from the 19th century remain on door and window lintels along the winding streets. Ledrada and the surrounding area are also home to numerous crosses, most of which have religious origins. These traces are found not only on individual buildings, but are also part of the townscape and its surroundings.
Las Barrancas, also known as Ledrada’s Plaza Mayor, was and remains a centre of local life. Annual Quintos celebrations were held there; puppet shows were also performed, fair prizes were announced, and festival queens and maids of honour were presented. Alongside its buildings, the square thus represents community gatherings in the town.
Hiking trails, railway line and landscape
The RL4, the Ruta de los Secretos de Ledrada, leads to the former railway station. The station buildings and railway line can be seen there. A longer section of the former railway line from Ledrada, including the former station, is also part of the Vía Verde de la Plata Salamanca-Sur. The former railway connection is therefore a subject both as a visible trace on site and in the context of this Vía Verde.
The trails around Ledrada offer further views of the landscape. From the summit of Los Hermanitos, panoramic views extend across the Sierra de Béjar and the Sierra de Francia. You can hike from Ledrada along the route through the Valle de Sangusín. The views from the summit and the walk through the valley offer different perspectives on the surrounding landscape.
The RL5, Ruta de los Sabores de Ledrada, passes through a natural area along the Arroyo de Sangusín to San Medel. Along the way, it runs past plots and farms where cattle and pigs are raised. This livestock farming represents two flavours associated with Ledrada and their high-quality products. The route thus connects the landscape with a local link to food, while keeping the two subjects distinct.
The surrounding natural environment is also described as diverse: the landscape around Ledrada belongs to the LIC and ZEPA protected-area networks. Among other species, foxes, wildcats, stone martens and weasels, as well as hoopoes, green woodpeckers, kingfishers and birds of prey, can be observed there. The list includes both mammals and birds; however, sightings of specific species are not guaranteed.
A notice dated 19 March 2025 described Ledrada’s hiking trails as marked and signposted with route names, total distance, difficulty level and elevation gain. Check on site that the signs are still in place before relying on this information.
Local traditions
A clearly dated glimpse into local life is the Matanza de Ledrada in February 2026. Residents and people close to them gathered in the square. The festivities included a tribute to the Iberian pig, the distribution of sweets and aguardiente, the traditional butchering of the animal and a communal meal. This description refers to the event held in February 2026.
