San Miguel De Valero brings together a landscape shaped by agriculture, hiking trails, woodland and traces of history. When planning your stay, you can choose from several focuses: a shorter hike, longer routes in the Sierra de las Quilamas, or a look at local history and traditions.

Landscape Between Vineyards and the Sierra

The landscape around San Miguel De Valero includes vineyards, olive groves, fruit trees and small home gardens. The slopes and valley floors are dotted with terraced landscapes that reflect a historic Mediterranean tradition. The Sierra de las Quilamas is a natural area of landscape and ecological significance near the town. Trees and plants growing in the Sierra include Pyrenean oaks, strawberry trees, cork oaks, heather and holm oaks. Shady, damp areas, such as La HonfrĂa, are also home to biodiverse mixed forests of chestnut trees and holly.

A prominent high point is Pico Cervero: located between the municipalities of San Miguel De Valero and Navarredonda de la Rinconada, it reaches 1,465 metres and is the highest point in the Sierra de las Quilamas. The landscape around the town thus brings cultivated land, terraces and woodland together with a clearly identified landmark in the mountains.

Compare Hiking Routes by Length and Time

The Ruta Norte de los pueblos runs from San Miguel De Valero to Linares de RiofrĂo. It is about 5.5 kilometres long, takes around two and a half hours to walk, and is rated easy to moderate. For a shorter stretch, the Ruta de la Miel o de los Valles links San Miguel De Valero with Valero: this section is about 2.4 kilometres long and takes around an hour. From Valero, the route continues to where the Quilamas flows into the AlagĂłn.

The two routes therefore differ both in the length of the section described and in walking time. If you are considering longer distances, the Ruta Noroeste de la Sierra Mayor links San Miguel De Valero with La Honfría and Pico Cervero. This route has a shorter option of about 14.6 kilometres and a longer one of about 15.4 kilometres. Another option is the Ruta a Castil de Cabras: it starts in the town, follows paths towards Pocilgas de la Novata–Quilamas, and is about 11.2 kilometres long. It is also part of the Ruta de los Caminos Históricos de Entresierras.

The waymarked Camino de los Trasiegos is about 3.5 kilometres long and descends through dense oak and chestnut forests on the slopes. It offers views over the Quilamas Valley. Along the Camino is a distinctive threshing floor made of granite slabs, where barley was winnowed. Its name recalls earlier times, when goods such as honey and pollen were transported and traded.

Church, Beekeeping and Local Traditions

The parish church, Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel, in San Miguel De Valero dates from the 17th century and preserves a Mudejar wooden ceiling. Another historical connection goes back further: beekeeping has been part of the local economy here since the 18th century. Honey production is associated with numerous beekeepers and a cooperative.

The patron saint festivities also offer a specific date to consider when planning your trip. They take place on 29 September in honour of San Miguel Arcángel and include a parade, a mass, a procession, a floral offering, novilladas and an evening verbena. Individual programme details may vary. Anyone interested in the connection between landscape and local history can find along the Camino de los Trasiegos both reminders of former trade routes and evidence of agricultural work.
