Villamayor brings together a rich history of stone with church architecture, festivals and routes along the Tormes. If you are looking for a hotel in Villamayor, these themes can help guide your choice of destination: Piedra de Villamayor represents a local tradition of building and craftsmanship, while riverside paths and milling heritage offer a different perspective on the landscape.

Church and Stone Culture

The present-day appearance of the Iglesia Parroquial de San Miguel was completed in 1777. It was preceded by renovations in the 16th and 18th centuries; the work was led by Jerónimo García de Quiñones. The church developed from the Romanesque Ermita de San Ginés. A slate inscription in San Miguel commemorates the lightning strike of August 1, 1774, known as “el centellazo.”

Piedra de Villamayor is a clay-rich sedimentary rock that is easy to cut and work. This makes it suitable for ornamentation and sculpture. Traditionally, it has been used as a building material: in Villamayor homes as well as in Salamanca’s historic and artistic buildings and monuments.

The old quarries of Las Cocinitas are considered the source of the golden-hued stone. Salamanca’s landmark buildings were constructed from this stone, including the cathedrals, Plaza Mayor and the university façade. Hábitat Minero explores how work was carried out in Villamayor’s quarries in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. Together, these themes show different aspects of the local stone tradition: the material, how it is worked and its use in architecture.

Festivals and Event Dates

The Feria de la Piedra has been held in May since 2000, in the week before the patron saint festivities. For a week, activities celebrate and promote local natural stone. The program includes a sculpture competition as well as exhibitions of works and artists. The May dates are therefore clearly distinct from the Fiestas de Agosto, which take place in mid-August.

The Fiestas de Agosto feature a range of community activities, including archery, fencing, football and board games, as well as street theatre, dancing and outdoor dance events. There is also a soapbox race and a communal meal. The Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de los Remedios features a twelve-day program of cultural, sporting, musical and social activities. The festivities thus range from competitions and physical activities to art and community events.

Walks, the River and Milling Heritage

The Los Molinos route runs along the Tormes and can be followed on foot or by bicycle. Take seasonal heat into account when planning. Another walk, El Tormes piedra a piedra, is about 3.8 kilometres long and follows the riverbank between Molino de la Moral and Molino del Canto. Its approximate length and two endpoints provide a clear framework for planning the walk.

El Tormes piedra a piedra combines information about riverside vegetation with landscape impressions linked to painting and literature. Molino de El Canto is a mill built in the 18th century that is now a wetland with diverse plant and animal life. The riverside routes therefore offer more than just the trail itself: they also bring the area’s plant life, landscape and former milling activity into view.
