Aldealengua De Santa María brings together a variety of themes: the history of the parish church, local festival traditions and designated cycling routes. Depending on whether you are interested in architecture, a particular festival date or a bike ride, different details of the village come to the fore.

Church, Fountain and Local History

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción was originally built in the Romanesque style. Following later restorations, it developed into an eclectic church building; it also has a bell tower. Three archivolts stand out on the Romanesque entrance. The capitals are decorated with geometric and plant motifs. Archivolts are the concentric bands of an arch that frame the portal, while capitals are the upper parts of the columns. The entrance therefore displays specific Romanesque forms, while the building as a whole has a later, eclectic character. The main altarpiece is a work by Antonio Martínez and dates from the Baroque period.

Another local detail is the Fuente de Aldealengua de Santa María in the village center. The fountain is built against a wall; its elongated trough is L-shaped and has two long spouts. The trough was formerly used as a watering place for livestock. The fountain’s design and former use give it its own historical significance, distinct from the church’s architectural and artistic history.

Festivals and Cultural Events

Santa Águeda is celebrated in February. The festival is organized by and for women and has a strong local tradition. The May festival of San Isidro includes a communal meal: the local agricultural association, Junta Agropecuaria, invites people to it, and the whole village gathers. If you want to plan your trip around either festival, check the dates for the year in question.

Traditionally, on August 18, residents go down to the river to eat together. This day is called Día del Perrillo or de San Roque. The patron saint festivities in honor of San Roque and San Roquillo, which took place from August 16 to 18, 2026, included religious, musical and folkloric events, including El Perrillo. On August 16, the program included a Mass and procession in honor of San Roque at 1 p.m. On August 17, Grupo de Danzas de Ayllón performed at 7:45 p.m. These specific events were part of the 2026 edition; if you are traveling later, check the festival dates and program details in effect at that time.

The Juegos Tradicionales del Mundo exhibition also added a cultural highlight: it featured representative games and toys from around the world. If you are interested in this exhibition, check the program for your travel dates, as later editions may be different.

Cycling Routes, Road Route and Landscape

Aldealengua de Santa María is listed in the provincial 20 Rutas BTT program as a location for mountain biking routes through natural areas directly or historically connected with water. Distinct from these is the Ruta de los Palomares circular cycling route from Maderuelo to Riaza: it passes through Aldealengua de Santa María, is 54.4 kilometers long and has a moderate-to-easy difficulty level. The program describes the natural areas’ connection with water, while the Ruta de los Palomares specifies a particular distance and difficulty level. Check trail conditions before setting off.

Another separate route is the Ruta de bodegas a los mares de los dinosaurios. It follows the C-114 (SG-945) road through Aldealengua de Santa María and then on to Maderuelo. The Linares Reservoir is also relevant to the landscape around the village: its banks feature exceptional riverside forests. These landscape and route connections complement the village’s historical details without being interchangeable with the festival dates or cycling routes.
