Carrascal Del Río
Accommodation in Carrascal Del Río
Carrascal Del Río brings together the landscape of the Hoces del Río Duratón, hiking trails, diverse birdlife and historic buildings. Almost a third of the municipality lies within the Hoces del Río Duratón Natural Park. This means you can plan a trip around the gorge landscape and outdoor activities, as well as traces of local culture in the town and across the municipality. Whether you want to focus on short walks, a longer hike, historic sites or water sports, the options differ considerably in character and length.
Gorge landscapes and birdlife
Pine forests lie west of Carrascal Del Río; to the east, the landscape is shaped by gorges, scrubland and holm oaks. Almost 768 pairs of griffon vultures breed in the cliffs of the Hoces del Río Duratón. There are also populations of Egyptian vultures, peregrine falcons, golden eagles and eagle owls. Populations and nesting sites can vary seasonally. The area within the natural park and its varied landscapes give the surroundings a distinctly natural character, though you cannot expect to see the same things at every time of year.
Trails of varying lengths
Senda 4 – Camino de San Frutos is a 1 km trail with impressive views. You can walk it year-round; no prior permit is required. Even so, autumn and spring are recommended as particularly suitable seasons. Senda 4 differs from longer routes mainly in its short distance and focus on the views.
Senda 3 – Ruta de la Molinilla is an easy nature trail that passes five caves over 1.8 km and takes about 30 minutes. It combines a manageable walking time with information along the way. It is also the only route to the bottom of the gorge that can be reached by car. Conditions may change due to park management, so check the current regulations before planning to drive in.
For a longer hike, consider the Barrancos del Duratón circular trail. It is almost 15 km long and runs between Carrascal Del Río and Castrojimeno. The entire route is signposted and has numerous information boards. Two variants of the Camino de San Frutos lead to the Ermita de San Frutos in the municipality of Carrascal Del Río, either via the Sierra or via Caballar; access is through Villaseca. This gives you a choice of short walks, a nature trail and longer routes, each with a different length.
Church, hermitage and local history
The Ermita de San Frutos was a 12th-century Benedictine monastery. Several early medieval anthropomorphic tombs are preserved in the nearby cemetery. Here, “anthropomorphic” describes tombs shaped to resemble the human body. The church, monastery and cemetery give the area a strong historical focus; the Ermita should be understood as a former monastery.
In the town, the church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción has Romanesque origins. Traditional wine presses, remains of Roman walls and a riverside mill with a complete hydraulic system have also been preserved. These buildings point to different periods in the town’s history and to varied uses. Festivals in Carrascal Del Río include celebrations in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción and San Roque. Dates and programmes may change from year to year; if you are planning your trip around one of these festivals, check the current event dates.
Water sports in Burgomillodo
Burgomillodo is part of Carrascal Del Río and is considered one of the larger centres for water sports, kayaking and rowing in Castilla y León.
