Discover Cuéllar: Castillo-Palacio and Mudéjar Art
Accommodation in Cuéllar
Cuéllar can be explored through a range of themes: the Castillo-Palacio and its walled complex, Mudéjar art, archival history and local traditions. When planning your trip, you can choose your own focus—such as architectural history, guided visits with reservations, or outdoor activities.
Castillo-Palacio and City Walls
The Castillo-Palacio de los Duques de Alburquerque is located in the center of Cuéllar, in the upper part of the town. In 1931, the Castillo-Palacio was declared a National Artistic Monument. The city walls also form a defining part of the historic heritage. The walled complex consists of two enclosures: an upper one that is more heavily fortified and a lower one with a more urban character. Both have an outer wall, and together they extend for about 2,000 meters.
The southern section of the walls offers a free walk with panoramic views of Cuéllar and the surrounding comarca.
Mudéjar Art and Archival History
Cuéllar preserves civil and religious Mudéjar architecture from the 12th and 13th centuries. The Centro de Interpretación del Arte Mudéjar in the Iglesia de San Martín offers an introduction to the town’s medieval history and Mudéjar art. The visit includes an audiovisual presentation. The two themes—local history and architecture—are explored together.
Another historical perspective is offered by the archive of the Casa Ducal de Alburquerque, one of Spain’s most important aristocratic archives. Its documents span the period from the 12th century to 1994. Visitors can take a guided tour of the archive led by the archivist, as well as a guided walk through Cuéllar’s Jewish Quarter. Advance reservations are essential for both. You can choose between an introduction through the archive and a tour of the Jewish Quarter; be sure to include a reservation for either visit in your plans.
Activities and Local Traditions
La Huerta del Duque is used by Cuéllar residents and visitors for walking, relaxing, exercising and eating outdoors. Its various uses make it a place to enjoy the outdoors in different ways—from a walk to physical activity or a meal outside.
During the Encierros de Cuéllar, the route first covers about five kilometers through the pine forests. The town race then runs for approximately 1.5 kilometers along an urban circuit.
Las Chuletas takes place on the Sunday after Easter Sunday. Families from Cuéllar gather in the pine forests, light fires and eat the famous chops. The day also features the cycling event known as the Clásica de la Chuleta.
