Juarros de Riomoros: River Landscapes and Traditions
Accommodation in Juarros de Riomoros
Juarros de Riomoros brings together the landscape along the Río Moros with short walking routes, churches, and local festivals. When planning your trip, you can focus on different aspects: the river and its surroundings, the routes described, or the town’s religious traditions.
River Landscapes and Routes
The Ruta del Río Moros follows the river through the Campiña Segoviana, from Monterrubio to Añe. Across much of the municipality, the ground is covered by siliceous sands from the Tierra de Pinares. In the El Soto area, pine trees increasingly define the landscape. Near the Río Moros, you can also see centuries-old willows and ash trees. Together, these features give the river surroundings a different character from the open Campiña and the more distant Sierra.
A short walk starts at the foot of the water tower and runs just under a kilometer to the Altozano del Pradillo. From this point, the El Río Moros–Valle de los Fresnos route offers views of the valley, the Campiña, and the Sierra. The viewpoint thus brings several landscape areas together in one place. If you are interested in the river surroundings, a route descends to the bank and crosses the Río Moros in the El Soto area.
The other routes mentioned also differ in the landscape features described: the Camino de Anaya has more ravines and runs alongside the river. The Camino de Abades is described as the flatter of the routes listed. When choosing, you can therefore consider whether you prefer the river and ravines or a route described as flatter.
Churches and Local History
The parish church of Virgen del Pollo stands at the highest point of Juarros de Riomoros. The church of San Pedro Apóstol has its own architectural character: the Baroque building dates from the 18th century, has a single-nave layout, and features a bell gable with two openings for bells. Inside, you can see depictions of San Pedro, the Virgen del Rosario, and the Virgen del Pollo. The two churches can thus be distinguished by their names and the different features described.
The remains of the Ermita de la Inmaculada are located by the river, at the site of the original settlement. Its location adds a connection to the area’s earlier settlement history to the impressions of the town. You can bear this historical context in mind when exploring the Río Moros and its surroundings.
Festivals Throughout the Year
The Virgen del Pollo patron saint festival takes place on the third weekend of August. It includes a Mass, a procession, and numerous entertainment and festive events. The festival in honor of San Pedro is held on June 29: a Eucharistic celebration and a procession are followed by the traditional refreshment, accompanied by dulzaina and tamboril music. These two dates offer different opportunities to include religious celebrations and local traditions in your travel plans.
If you would like to plan your stay around a festival, you can use the relevant date as a guide: June 29 for San Pedro or the third weekend of August for Virgen del Pollo. If you would rather focus on the landscape, the routes described offer specific differences in their features and viewpoints. You can plan your visit around your own interest in the river, landscape, architecture, or festival traditions.
