Discover Valseca: GeoMuseo, Routes and Traditions
Accommodation in Valseca
Valseca brings together geology, trails and local cultural history. To help you plan your trip, the town offers a range of perspectives: an exhibition covering geological and ethnogeological themes, self-guided excursions, a section of the Camino de Madrid, as well as festivals and local specialities.
Geology at the GeoMuseo and in the field
The GeoMuseo de Valseca displays 700 exhibits across four areas: minerals, rocks, fossils and ethnogeology.
Historically, the GeoMuseo was the first public municipal collection of minerals, rocks and fossils in Castilla y León to open to visitors. Its history is therefore also part of the region's cultural history: it encompasses not only the collection, but also the public presentation of these subjects.
The Geo-ruta del Berrocal de Valseca takes you outdoors. This self-guided excursion follows trails and passes through landscapes in the municipality of Valseca, and is suitable for all age groups. Unlike the museum, the focus here is not on a collection of exhibits, but on the route through the area.
Two routes with different profiles
The Ruta Urbana y familiar Pequeños Exploradores is an easy 4.8-kilometre circular route that takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It is designed as a half-day family outing and is aimed primarily at children aged six and over. Details about the circular route, distance and approximate duration help you plan it as a specific part of your day.
The two excursions have different focuses: Pequeños Exploradores is an easy family route with an approximate duration and age focus provided. The Geo-ruta del Berrocal is a self-guided excursion for all age groups, following trails and passing through landscapes in the municipality. This lets you choose between a clearly defined circular route and a route with geological connections to the landscape.
The Camino de Madrid through Valseca
The Camino de Madrid also passes through Valseca. It is a section of the Camino de Santiago from Madrid to Sahagún, running from Zamarramala through the town and onward to Los Huertos. If you are interested in pilgrimage routes, this section places Valseca within a wider connection. It offers a different perspective on the town from the Geo-rutas: the focus here is on the route between the named villages.
Patron saint festivals and local specialities
The patron saint festivals in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción take place in the last week of July or the first week of August. The exact week varies from year to year. Recurring festival traditions include a popular Caldereta, verbenas and cultural and religious activities. If you want to plan your trip around the festivities, check the dates for the year in question.
Local produce also offers a glimpse into Valseca's traditions. Valseca chickpeas carry the Marca de Garantía designation. The town is also associated with pastries such as bollos de azúcar, ciegas and rosquillas. Together, the product designation and the names of the pastries showcase different aspects of the local culinary profile.
A biographical link to cultural history
Dr. Velasco is another figure with ties to the town's cultural history: he was born in Valseca in 1815 and promoted anthropology in Spain. This biographical connection adds another perspective on the town's history, alongside the geological collections, routes and pilgrimage path.
