Villacastín brings together religious architecture and monastic tradition with traces of water and wool crafts, granite landscapes and a multi-day route. When planning your trip, you can focus on different aspects: historic buildings, seasonal festivals or the Cañada Real Soriana Occidental, which ends in Villacastín.

Churches, monastic tradition and historic buildings

The Iglesia de San Sebastián has a restrained Herrerian exterior. The Monasterio de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, also known as the Convento de Santa Clara, was built in 1621. In the monastery kitchens, Almendras Garrapiñadas are prepared slowly. In this way, architectural heritage and a specific monastic tradition centred on a sweet product sit side by side.

Other buildings each have their own distinctive features. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Caridad has a polychrome Baroque altarpiece; the Ermita del Santo Cristo del Valle contains a Mudejar coffered ceiling. The Ermita de Nuestra Señora del Carrascal bears the date 1595 and stands on a hillside crowned by a large rocky outcrop. The details thus range from the design of an altarpiece and a ceiling to the location of a sanctuary in the landscape.

The Fuente de San Juan also tells of an earlier use of water: it was a Roman watering trough for livestock. Water was drawn through its three round arches for animals or for washing laundry with buckets. Las Balsas reveals another aspect of working history. The surviving Perella wool-washing house is considered one of the largest wool-washing facilities in Europe. Together, these places trace a journey from water supply to wool processing.

Granite landscape and the Cañada Real

Southwest of Villacastín, along the N-110 where it crosses the Cardeña River at Puente Nuevo, characteristic granite landscapes of the foothills can be seen. These formations include granite blocks, balancing rocks, tower-like stacks, rock slabs and granite cliffs. The landscape thus offers a range of granite formations at a named river crossing.

The Cañada Real Soriana Occidental spans a different timescale from a visit to individual buildings. The route begins in Arcones and ends in Villacastín. Stretching 103 kilometres, it runs as a natural route through various landscapes in the province of Segovia. The route is listed as taking five days on foot or three days by mountain bike. The two-day difference is relevant when planning your schedule; conditions and stage logistics may vary, so tailor your specific plans to your trip.

Villacastín is very well connected by road via the A-6, N-VI and N-110. Together with the Cañada Real, this makes it a destination for travellers interested in either its buildings and landscapes or planning a longer route.

Festivals and dates throughout the year

Recurring events include the Feria de ganado, maquinaria y productos artesanales in May, held on the Eras del Cristo del Valle. The Romería de la Ascensión de la Virgen del Carrascal takes place at the hermitage on Ascension Day. The patron saint festivities in honour of Saint Sebastian fall in the last week of August. The “Villa de Villacastín” folk festival is part of the cultural week in July.

These events take place at different times of the year and have different characters, from a fair for livestock, machinery and handcrafted products to the romería and the folk festival. If you are travelling for one of these festivals, check the specific dates for your travel year in advance.
