Duruelo De La Sierra: Nature, Trails and History
Accommodation in Duruelo De La Sierra
Rock formations, water, routes and medieval remains give Duruelo de la Sierra several facets. When planning your trip, you can consider nature, cycling, culture and bus connections as different aspects of the destination.
Rocks, Water and High Altitudes
Castroviejo is a rocky area in Duruelo de la Sierra shaped by wind, rain, snow and ice. From the Mirador de Castroviejo, the view stretches across the Sierra de Urbión and the first few kilometres of the Río Duero; a 360-degree panorama is described. Here, the focus is on the shapes formed by erosion and the expansive views.
Cueva Serena is a cave formed in the rocks with a waterfall. Its appearance changes with the seasons: in winter, the waterfall can freeze, while during the spring snowmelt it flows particularly strongly. Pico de Urbión reaches 2,229 metres and offers views of the Demanda, Cebollera, Cameros, Moncayo and Cabrejas mountain ranges. The Fuente del Duero, near Pico de Urbión at an altitude of 2,140 metres, is considered the source of the Río Duero. It can be reached from Peñas Blancas via the signposted GR-14.
Routes and Cycling
The Ruta de las Cascadas II begins in the Santa Marina landscape area. The route takes you to the Hiedra waterfall and the Pozas Malas cave, then on to Los Calderines and Paraje del Cubo; it ends at Laguna Marigomez. The route is therefore defined by specific stops and a clearly named endpoint.
Mountain bikers can choose from three signposted routes in the Espacio B.T.T. de Duruelo de la Sierra. They vary in difficulty and connect Duruelo with Regumiel de la Sierra, Quintanar de la Sierra and Canicosa de la Sierra. Their number, signposting and different difficulty levels give you specific points to consider when planning cycling as part of your stay. The connections mentioned also show which other municipalities are included in this route network.
Church and Medieval History
The Iglesia de San Miguel Arcángel has a single nave divided into three sections. Its façade retains three windows with horseshoe arches, which have a Mozarabic character and date from the 10th century. The number and shape of the windows, as well as their dating, give the church a clearly defined architectural profile.
The Necrópolis Medieval lies around the church. It may contain around a hundred tombs dating from the 9th to the 13th century. This time span extends beyond the dating of the three windows: the church and the Necrópolis thus offer different ways to explore the history of the place.
