If you’re looking for a hotel for a trip to Golmayo, the town offers a distinctive cultural and historical focus: Late Gothic architecture, Roman remains and finds from the Cretaceous period. The landscape and recurring traditional events also shape its character. These themes offer different points of interest—from architectural history and palaeontology to customs tied to specific dates in the year.

Buildings and traces from different periods

The parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Asunción is a Hispano-Flemish Late Gothic building dating from the late 15th century. It represents a different period from the Roman remains also found in Golmayo. The Puente Romano de Golmayo is a two-arched Roman bridge over the Río Golmayo, 100 metres east of the town. A visible section of a Roman road lies about 200 metres from the bridge, in the direction of Soria. The 60-metre-long section was built on the rock and is located at the foot of Uxama.

The bridge and road section offer two concrete glimpses of Roman construction: a river crossing here, and a stretch of paved road there. Details of their location and extent help distinguish the two remains without linking them into a single route. For a history-focused trip, comparing them with the much later Late Gothic church creates an appealing arc across the centuries.

Golmayo also has a palaeontological side. The Los Caños site yielded dinosaur and other vertebrate remains from the beginning of the Cretaceous period, around 130 million years ago. The Zorralbo site provides evidence of Mesozoic vertebrates. Fossils from both sites are housed at the Museo Numantino de Soria. The sites in Golmayo and the collection in the museum in Soria thus represent two different aspects of the same story: where the finds came from and where they are kept today.

Another protected site is La Cuenca, within the municipality of Golmayo. The settlement is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Conjunto Etnológico category; the relevant decision was published in 2006. At the entrance to Golmayo, a monolithic sandstone sarcophagus also stands out, now used as a livestock watering trough. The object combines its historic appearance with a traditional practical use.

Landscape and trails

Golmayo’s landscape includes extensive stands of oak, holm oak, pine and juniper. The shrub vegetation includes thyme, lavender, tea, chamomile, elderberry and mallow. The wildlife is also described as diverse, including rabbits and partridges, as well as birds of prey such as golden eagles and griffon vultures. These natural features add the landscape in which Golmayo is set to the picture of its buildings and archaeological sites.

On the Camino Natural Santander-Mediterráneo, after passing beneath the N-122, the route runs parallel to the riverbed of the Río Golmayo through typical riverside vegetation. The Abejar–Soria stage also reaches a turnoff to Golmayo. These details describe different aspects of the route: its course alongside the river and riverside vegetation, and a turnoff in the direction of the town. If you’re looking into the trail, they are useful reference points for understanding the route as described.

Traditions on set dates

The events calendar has different highlights in February and August. The traditional pig slaughter takes place on the last weekend of February. It is organised jointly by the Asociación de Vecinos de Golmayo and the Ayuntamiento de Golmayo. La Trilla follows on the first Sunday in August: a popular event honouring the work of earlier generations. Activities depicted include mowing, bringing in the harvest, tying sheaves and threshing.

Golmayo’s summer festivities take place on the last weekend of August. So, although La Trilla and the summer festivities both fall in August, they take place at different times: La Trilla is held on the first Sunday of the month, while the Fiestas take place on its last weekend. If one of these traditions is important to your travel plans, check the date of the event in advance. Cultural history, the landscape or a suitable event date may determine your choice of hotel in Golmayo, depending on what interests you most about your trip.
