Matute De La Sierra combines Romanesque architecture with a local history shaped in part by depopulation and later community involvement. It is also situated at the foot of Cerro de San Juan, and the Zarranzano flows through the village. These provide different points of interest to consider when planning your trip: a Romanesque church, another attraction, landscape features, and summer cultural events.

Romanesque Architecture

The Church of Santa Coloma is Romanesque and was built in the final years of the 12th century. It contains a Romanesque baptismal font dating from the 12th century. The font’s date therefore spans the entire century, while the church’s construction is more precisely placed at its end. Later alterations and additions changed the original fabric only slightly. The Ermita de la Soledad is also one of the attractions of Matute De La Sierra.

Location and Landscape

Matute De La Sierra lies at the foot of Cerro de San Juan; the Zarranzano River flows through the village. The first point describes the village’s location at the foot of the hill, while the second describes the river’s course through the settlement. The Church of Santa Coloma lies southeast of the village center, in surroundings with small orchards and densely vegetated woodland. The landscape details therefore differ in scale: Cerro de San Juan and the river relate to the village, while the gardens and woodland describe the church’s immediate surroundings.

Local History

Matute De La Sierra was depopulated for more than thirty years; afterward, the efforts of some former residents brought the village back to life. This history differs from the construction chronology of Santa Coloma: the church points to a specific medieval period, whereas depopulation and revival relate to a later chapter in the village’s history. In this way, architectural heritage and the efforts of former residents represent different historical perspectives.

Summer Cultural Events

The patron saint’s festival of Santa Coloma is celebrated on the first Sunday in August. An association of friends of Romanesque art organized a cultural week every summer, with talks, concerts, and activities in the Church of Santa Coloma. The 14th edition was announced for August 5–9, 2024. The festival and cultural week differ in timing: the patron saint’s festival falls on a recurring Sunday, while the announced cultural week edition lasted several days. If a specific event date affects your trip, check the latest information before making plans.
