Ucero: Trails, Nature and History
Accommodation in Ucero
In Ucero, the landscapes of the Parque Natural Cañón del Río Lobos meet the history of its buildings and settlements. If you’re looking for a hotel in Ucero, you can plan your trip around two main themes: trails and nature in the Cañón del Río Lobos, and historic traces around the castle, chapels and Roman aqueduct. The distinctions below can help you plan your time around the topics that interest you most.
Landscapes and trails along the Río Lobos
Ucero is one of the municipalities in the Parque Natural Cañón del Río Lobos. Here, the dissolution of limestone has created a karst landscape with a maze of caves on different levels; some of these caves are connected by deep shafts. Vertical, vegetation-free rock faces rise above the river. Deciduous vegetation, conifers and bare rock form a striking contrast.
Several trails offer different experiences. The PR-SO-BU-65 Senda del Río follows the Río Lobos through the park and crosses the river several times. It starts where the SO-920 road meets the junction beside the Fuente Engómez recreation area in the municipality of Ucero. The Senda de las Gullurías, by contrast, is an 8.55-kilometre circular trail that starts and ends at the Casa del Parque car park. It reaches the Mirador de las Gullurías, which is considered a good bird-watching spot. So these trails focus respectively on the river and its repeated crossings, and on a circular route and birdwatching.
The Senda del Castillo offers a different perspective: it is an easy circular trail along the Río Ucero and passes through a 130-metre section of the Roman aqueduct that carried water to the city of Uxama. For a longer connection between settlements, the PR SO3 Ruta de las Sabinas links Ucero and Calatañazor. The Senda del Castillo is a circular trail associated with the Roman aqueduct, while the PR SO3 connects Ucero and Calatañazor.
Buildings and traces of history
The Castillo de Ucero and its surroundings make up a 2.3-hectare archaeological site. The remains date from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages. In Ucero itself, the Iglesia Parroquial dates from the 18th century. The Ermita de San Bartolomé has an older building history: it was built in the first decades of the 13th century in a transitional Romanesque style with Cistercian influence. As a Romanesque-Protogothic chapel, it was part of the former Templar monastery of San Juan de Otero. As of 27 August 2026, the Ermita was closed until further notice; check access before your trip.
Several historic sites are associated with the Roman aqueduct. The Senda del Castillo passes through a 130-metre section of the aqueduct; the Cueva la Zorra is a 133-metre vaulted section. The aqueduct supplied water to Uxama. There are also paintings in the Cueva Conejos. The aqueduct illustrates Roman water supply, while the paintings in the Cueva Conejos offer a different historical perspective.
Visitor information, caves and local events
The Casa del Parque del Cañón del Río Lobos is in Ucero, on the SO-920 road at kilometre 16, and serves as a visitor information point for planning visits to the natural park. The building dates from the 19th century and was formerly used as a chocolate factory and paper mill. The Centro de Interpretación de la Naturaleza is also in Ucero, in a former fish farm.
Soria Cavernaria is listed as offering guided visits to the Cueva de la Galiana Baja; check before your trip whether the service is currently running and dates are available. A cave tour in the Cueva de la Galiana is described as including wide galleries, small climbing sections and easy rope passages. As the format may change, check the current tour itinerary and availability in advance.
Local festivals also add to the historic themes. On Día de la Cruz, 3 May, the Santo Cristo del Castillo is carried in a procession to the fields, which are then blessed. The patron saint festivals in honour of the Virgen de la Salud and San Bartolomé take place from 24 to 26 August.
