Arroyo de la Encomienda: History, Nature and Golf

Arroyo de la Encomienda combines cultural attractions with riverside scenery and opportunities for outdoor activities. Romanesque Church and Monastery History

The Iglesia de San Juan Ante Portam Latinam is a Romanesque church dating from the mid-12th century. It is also Arroyo de la Encomienda’s most significant monumental building. Its period of construction provides a clear reference point for the town’s medieval history.

The remains of the Monasterio de Santa Ana de La Flecha include the former church and part of the convent building. The site lies on a wooded bend in the river, with a pesquera. Here, the remains of a religious complex meet a distinctive riverside landscape.

Archaeological remains from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods in the municipality provide evidence of settlement in both periods. The timeline therefore stretches from early traces of settlement to the Romanesque church. Another historical trace leads to the Priorato de San Pedro de La Flecha: its former buildings belonged to the Hieronymite community of Nuestra Señora del Prado de Valladolid until the confiscation of church property in 1835. The complex is poorly preserved.

The Pisuerga and Outdoor Trails

The Ribera del Pisuerga is designated an Área de Singular Valor Ecológico, or an area of special ecological value. The Río Pisuerga offers the chance to spend time in close contact with nature. Cerro de la Horca is also among Arroyo de la Encomienda’s specially protected natural areas.

Trail Running and Golf: Comparing Routes and Distances

The 2026 edition of the IX Arroyada Trail features three formats: a long trail of 25.5 kilometres, a short trail of 15 kilometres, and a non-competitive hiking route, also 15 kilometres long. This makes the distances easy to compare: the two shorter formats are the same length, while the long trail covers 25.5 kilometres. The executive golf course has 18 holes, a par of 60 and a round of approximately 3,100 metres; it is designed for players of all abilities. The specifications may be revised. The Fiestas del Santo Patrón, in honour of San Juan Ante Portam Latinam, traditionally take place on 6 May. San Antonio de Padua is celebrated in La Flecha on 13 June.
