When choosing where to stay, the themes that shape your visit often matter. In Cigales, wine tradition and notable cultural sites offer specific points of reference: historic wine cellars, the D.O. Cigales and the Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago are all part of the town’s character. This lets you search for hotels in Cigales with a clear picture of your destination in mind.

Wine cellars, Clarete and wine heritage

Cigales is considered the birthplace of Clarete, a light, highly aromatic wine. The rosé wines of the D.O. Cigales also have their own production tradition, characterised by a blend of red and white grape varieties. These two features of local wine offer different insights into the region’s wine culture, without equating Clarete with rosé wine.

Cigales has two traditional wine-cellar districts dating back to the 16th century, with more than 250 cellars in total. One of them is the centuries-old Bodega Tradicional Cigaleña in the Barrio de Bodegas «Los Gatos». It is excavated nine metres into the ground and includes labyrinthine sisas. Another striking feature is an 18-metre-long Roman beam weighing more than a tonne.

A visit to the bodega gives you the chance to learn more about different wine-making methods in Cigales and the history of the D.O. Cigales. It concludes with a tasting of a rosé wine from the D.O. Cigales. Tours are available for groups of two to ten people, by advance reservation. Check the latest booking details before making plans.

Church, architectural history and historic sites

The Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the “Monument” category. Its construction began in 1535, based on plans by Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón. The project was ultimately carried out by Juan de Saravia and Diego de Praves; the church was completed in 1772. Its long construction history can therefore be traced through specific names and dates. Guided tours of the church are organised through the Cigales Tourist Office. Check the latest booking details in advance.

Another historic landmark is the Palacio de los Condes de Benavente, the palace in Cigales where Empress Ana de Austria was born. The town is therefore also associated with an important historical figure.

Just outside Cigales is the Ermita de Ntra. Sra. de Viloria, accessible via the Camino de los Mártires. Its architecture brings together different building periods: the 16th-century chancel is topped by a star vault, while the single-nave body dates from the 17th century and has a barrel vault. During the Virgen de Viloria procession on 8 and 9 September, the image is carried to the church, accompanied by dances. The exact arrangements may vary from year to year.

Harvest festival and routes through the region

The Fiesta de la Vendimia takes place in Cigales in September. It is considered the oldest harvest festival in Castilla y LeĂłn and is recognised as a regional event of tourist interest. Its recurring features include grape treading, the tasting of the first must, folk groups and traditional dances. The detailed programme may vary from one edition to another.

Those looking to explore the wine region on a larger scale can take the Senderos del Clarete, a 93-kilometre route through twelve towns on the Ruta del Vino Cigales. Trail conditions and signage may change, so check both before setting out. The Ruta del Vino Cigales lies between Valladolid and Palencia, and the AutovĂa A-62 connects its towns. This regional context adds to the picture of Cigales without specifying a particular travel time or an individual connection within the town.

Landscape and outdoor activities

El Barrero is a public, easily accessible recreation area in Cigales. It has parking, tables and seating. For a different view of the landscape, visit the Mirador del Pisuerga on the stretch of the Canal de Castilla in Cigales: it offers a panoramic view of a meander in the Pisuerga.

A section of the Canal de Castilla can also be precisely located: the stretch beginning at the Puente de Santa Cruz lies entirely within Cigales. Together with the viewpoint and the longer Senderos del Clarete, it shows how varied the options are in scale—from a single viewpoint to a route through twelve towns. Which of these appeals to you most may help shape your choice of destination and hotel stay.
