Cuenca de Campos brings together Mudéjar architecture, religious traditions and an ornithological route. This offers a choice of different focuses for your stay: you can explore the architectural features of the churches and houses, learn about local festival traditions, or plan a route on foot or by bicycle.

Churches, Mudéjar Architecture and Arcaded Houses

The parish church of Santos Justo y Pastor is a 16th-century Mudéjar building. Its main chapel has a coffered ceiling with polychrome interlacing ornaments and pinecone muqarnas. These terms describe different aspects of the design: “coffered ceiling” refers to the structured ceiling, “polychrome” to its use of multiple colors, and “interlacing ornaments” to the pattern. The pinecone muqarnas is also part of the ornamental decoration. These specific features of the main chapel make the style tangible.

At the church of Santa María del Castillo, there are three busts in the upper section, as well as columns from the Roman city of Clunia. Cuenca de Campos also preserves numerous arcaded houses, typical of the townscapes of Tierra de Campos. This brings together historic elements on a church building and a common regional style of house.

Pilgrimage Route, Local Traditions and Sacred Art

Cuenca de Campos lies on the Camino de Santiago de Madrid pilgrimage route, heading towards Sahagún de Campos. The town has a municipal pilgrim hostel; its operating schedule may vary seasonally. If you plan to stay there, check its current operating status in advance.

Local religious customs mark different occasions. On the feast day of San Roque, Cuenca de Campos observes a “Voto de Villa” in remembrance of the town having been spared from the plague. The patronal festivities in honor of San Bernardino include pilgrimage processions to the San Bernardino hermitage in mid-May. Exact dates and the program may vary. The Voto de Villa thus links the remembrance of the plague with the feast day of San Roque, while the mid-May celebrations include the processions to San Bernardino.

The Museum of Sacred Art can be visited by prior reservation through Museos Vivos. Check the latest operating information before your visit and book in advance, as details may change.

Ornithological Route to Villabaruz de Campos

The Cuenca de Campos–Villabaruz de Campos ornithological route can be walked or cycled. It passes through the ZEPA “La Nava-Campos Sur” Special Protection Area for Birds and is marked with directional and information signs. Unlike the local churches and houses, the focus here is a signposted route. If you are interested in birdlife, you can make the route a nature-focused part of your stay. Check current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.
