Geria: Churches, Festivals and River Landscape
Accommodation in Geria
Geria offers several points of interest to consider when planning a trip: historic religious buildings, festivals featuring religious and community traditions, and the confluence of two rivers near Las Ventas de Geria. These themes also vary over the course of the year. Architecture enthusiasts can compare the two churches by their construction dates and floor plans; those looking to combine a visit to Geria with a celebration can find events from spring through August.
Churches dating from the 16th and 17th centuries
The parish church of Asunción de Nuestra Señora is a Gothic stone building dating from the 17th century. Its single-nave layout has a main church space. The Ermita Cristo del Humilladero is also made of stone, but dates from the 16th century and has a square floor plan. This makes for a clear comparison in terms of both date and design: the chapel is older, while the parish church is distinguished by its Gothic style and single nave. Both the different construction dates and the floor plans are therefore helpful in understanding the two buildings.
Another trace of the past is the archaeological site of La Mosquila, also known as Fuente de La Mosquila. It lies within the municipality of Geria, southwest of the town, on the border with the neighboring municipality of Simancas. Its location distinguishes the site from the named churches in town: it turns attention to the municipal area and its position at the boundary with the neighboring municipality.
Festivals and traditions throughout the year
Two different traditions take place at the beginning of February. On February 3, the celebration in honor of Saint Blaise includes a Mass, a procession, the Entradilla dance, and wine offered by the town council. The following day, the traditional Pedida de la Rosquilla takes place: young men from Geria walk through the town with music, asking for rosquillas de palo, cured chorizo, wine, and liqueur. The food and drinks are then sampled in the schoolyards. The custom combines a musical procession through town with a communal tasting.
Religious and community events also shape local life in spring. During Holy Week, the Santo Cristo del Humilladero and the Virgen de los Dolores are brought together in the Maundy Thursday Procession of the Encounter. The Santo Cristo is carried on the shoulders from the chapel. On May 3, the Santa Cruz tradition involves a picnic on the meadow next to the chapel, along with enjoying the good weather. San Isidro Labrador is celebrated on May 15: local farmers process with the saint, and the fields are blessed. These dates are therefore associated with different forms of gathering—from a religious procession to an outdoor picnic and an agricultural tradition.
In the week before August 15, the cultural week features exhibitions, theater performances, sports competitions, and a communal paella. This broader cultural program takes place alongside the more religious or agriculture-focused events in spring. In recent years, a public Matanza has also been held between late December and early January. Pigs were singed and butchered according to an old tradition; the products made from them were sampled by those in attendance. This description refers to events held in recent years, not to a confirmed current or future date.
River landscape near Las Ventas de Geria
The Pisuerga and Duero meet near Las Ventas de Geria. There, the water of the Pisuerga is calmed by the Pesquera de Mazariegos. The confluence offers a different perspective on Geria from its churches and festivals: here, the focus is on the rivers and their relationship to each other.
When planning your trip, you can weigh up the different points of interest: architectural history, local traditions, or the river landscape. If you’d like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the date in advance; several traditions are tied to specific calendar days or a particular week. This way, you can connect your stay in Geria with the theme that interests you most.
