Íscar lies at the foot of a spur of the limestone páramos, where the old fortress stands. From this elevated position, the view stretches across a pine-covered plain crossed by the Cega, Pirón and Eresma rivers. If you are looking for a hotel in Íscar, you can plan your stay around the things that interest you most: architectural history, dance, local festive traditions or routes through nature.

Woodland scenery and routes

Parque de la Ermita de Cristo Rey is a recreational area of more than 25 hectares on the banks of the Pirón, among the pine forests of the municipality. Two circular routes start in the Puente Blanca area and offer a straightforward comparison of route lengths. The PRC-VA 38 Senda de la Resina is about 8 kilometres long, starting at the Área Recreativa de Puente Blanca recreational area and returning there. The route follows wide, well-marked, almost flat paths with no technical difficulties.

The Senda Real de Merinas is a 12-kilometre circular route. It starts in the Puente Blanca area and heads towards Villaverde de Íscar in the province of Segovia. This gives you a choice between a route of about 8 kilometres and a 12-kilometre loop. The Senda del Páramo y Cuestas de Íscar offers a different way to explore the natural surroundings: it is a prepared, guided route with explanatory information. The Camino Verde is open to pedestrians and cyclists.

Castle, architectural history and museum

Castillo de Íscar underwent extensive defensive fortification in the second half of the 15th century. This work included a defensive structure with a barbican, drawbridge, small artillery platform and round towers. These features give the castle’s defensive history a distinctive architectural character, without implying that it is currently open for visits.

Iglesia de Santa María de los Mártires preserves the apse of an original Mudéjar church. It is incorporated into a later building, which was worked on in the 16th century and remodelled in the 18th. Puente Blanca also combines a striking architectural feature with a cautiously qualified date: the two-arch limestone bridge crosses the Pirón and may date from the 15th or 16th century.

At Museo Mariemma, dance history and the collection go hand in hand. The museum preserves more than 150 items from the artistic legacy of dancer and choreographer Mariemma, including costumes, costume designs and castanets. Its guided tours feature live performances explaining four forms of Spanish dance. Groups should arrange their visit in advance.

Íscar’s traditional woodworking included making doors, windows, stools, benches and chests. Wooden beds with a rope-strung sleeping surface were also made; these beds, in particular, were considered typical of the town. The history of this craft adds another facet of local culture to the castle and church buildings.

Festivals and culinary traditions

Íscar celebrates the festival of its patron saint, Santa María de los Mártires, on 13 May, and the festival of San Miguel Arcángel on 29 September. At the festival in honour of Santa María de los Mártires, the Quintos wear white embroidered scarves. Local mothers, partners and embroiderers decorate them with colourful floral motifs as an offering to the saint. In 2025, the municipality described the custom as one that is still practised. Garlands of branches traditionally provide the main decorative feature outside Iglesia de Santa María de los Mártires.

On Easter Monday, a rural spring day is held in Parque de la Ermita de Cristo Rey, featuring a mass, procession and a dance of the Jota de Íscar around the image of Christ. Traditional dishes and sweets also have a seasonal connection: Íscar’s specialities include Empiñonados, Bollos de baño and Rosquillas Ciegas. Hornazo, a bread pie filled with a piece of pork loin and chorizo, is especially popular at Easter.
