Discover Tordesillas: Culture, History and Hotels
Accommodation in Tordesillas
Tordesillas offers several distinct themes to shape your stay: Mudéjar heritage and treaty history, museums with textile collections, wine and food culture, and nature and water activities. Which ones define your stay depends on whether you are mainly interested in architecture, historical context, local traditions, or landscapes and activities on the water.
Mudéjar Art and Monastery Spaces
The Real Monasterio de Santa Clara is one of the outstanding examples of Mudéjar art in Castile and León. Visitors can explore several areas: the Mudéjar chapel, the Arab courtyard, the Golden Chapel, the refectory, the El Vergel courtyard, the church and the Capilla de los Saldaña. The selection thus includes courtyards, chapels and other parts of the monastery.
A Gothic church was added to the Mudéjar palace in the 15th and early 16th centuries. The monastery also preserves Arab baths, which are among the best-preserved of their kind. The site’s building history can therefore be traced through its different features, and the visit includes several of the areas listed above.
Treaty History at the Casas del Tratado
Negotiations between Castile and Portugal concluded with the signing of the Treaty of Tordesillas on June 7, 1494, in the two interconnected palaces of the Casas del Tratado. The Museo del Tratado is located in the Casas. Its two halls explore historical, geographical, political and social aspects of the period. The site and exhibition offer different perspectives: the Casas represent the place where the treaty was actually concluded, while the museum covers several themes from the era. If you want to learn about the treaty, these two perspectives help distinguish the place from its historical context.
Collections and Art
The Museo y Centro Didáctico del Encaje de Castilla y León displays lace, embroidery, clothing, liturgical items, ceremonial cloths and household objects. The collection therefore goes beyond lace and embroidery to include objects from religious and domestic life.
The Capilla de los Alderete houses a 16th-century altarpiece featuring sculptures by Juan de Juni. As a single work of art, it offers a different focus from the wide range of categories at the Encaje Museum.
Wine and Local Food Culture
Bodega Subterránea Muelas offers tours of its underground wine cellar, including tastings of traditionally made wines. A local dish is Gallo Turresilano: in Tordesillas, it is prepared using an old recipe with roosters raised in local courtyards. Wine tasting and the dish tradition represent different sides of local food culture—one focuses on the wine cellar and its wines, the other on a traditional recipe.
Wetlands and Water Activities
The Riberas de Castronuño-Vega del Duero Nature Reserve includes Tordesillas. It is an important wetland and a breeding and wintering area for many different waterbirds. This natural setting adds a distinct landscape focus to the architectural and museum themes.
Fishing is permitted along the entire riverbank in Tordesillas; a fishing permit from Castile and León is required. Check the applicable regulations before fishing. Visitors can take to the water by canoe from the “Árbol Caído” landing stage. Before setting out, check the current requirements for using the waterway.
Summer Tours
Since 2001, theatrical tours called “Historias y Leyendas de la Villa” have taken place in Tordesillas during the summer. If you would like to include this activity in your stay, check the dates for your travel period.
