Discover Fermoselle: Old Town, Duero and nature
Accommodation in Fermoselle
Fermoselle combines a medieval town centre with Romanesque churches, viewpoints and the Arribes del Duero Natural Park nearby. If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Fermoselle, these different aspects of the town may influence your decision: would you mainly like to explore its architectural history, take in the landscape or discover the regional cuisine?
Old Town and Romanesque architecture
The historic Old Town has a medieval street layout, with narrow, steep streets. This structure shapes the character of the town centre. Its protected status is also part of Fermoselle’s history: in 1974, the town was designated a historic-artistic ensemble and placed under protection.
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción dates back to the 13th century and is Romanesque in style. Another Romanesque church is the Iglesia de Santa Colomba, in the upper part of Fermoselle. It dates from the 12th century and combines a cruciform layout with round arches. Together, these two churches offer a chance to see Romanesque architecture in buildings from different centuries.
Santa Colomba is also home to the Cristo del Humilladero, a Romanesque wooden carving from the 11th century. It therefore predates the church itself. The remains of Castillo de Doña Urraca are protected as an asset of special cultural interest, adding another dimension to the townscape’s historic buildings.
Viewpoints and landscape
The Mirador del Torrejón, also known as El Torojón, offers panoramic views over the town centre and the surrounding natural landscape. From the viewpoint at Castillo de Doña Urraca, you can look out over the Duero and the surrounding landscape. The river separates Spain and Portugal. The two viewpoints therefore offer different perspectives: one takes in the town and its natural surroundings, while the other draws your attention to the Duero.
Natural park, trails and trips on the Duero
The Arribes del Duero Natural Park lies near Fermoselle and is rich in flora and fauna. Activities available there include hiking, cycling and water sports. This gives you different ways to experience the landscape when planning your trip, without limiting you to a single type of excursion.
Two stages of the GR-14 also offer different points of reference. Stage 31 runs through the municipality of Fermoselle to Fuente de La Noria. Stage 32 follows the Senda del Duero from Fermoselle into the province of Salamanca and through the Tormes River Canyon. One stage is defined by its destination within the municipality, while the other is described by its route towards Salamanca and the Tormes Canyon.
Trips are offered on the Duero between the canyon walls. Guides provide information about the environment, wildlife and customs of the Arribes. Operators and timetables may change, so check the current trips before making your plans.
Casa del Parque and regional cuisine
The Casa del Parque “Convento de San Francisco” is located in the former Convento de San Francisco in Fermoselle. Its garden features ethnographic displays, fountains and kitchen gardens. The Casa also hosts a 15-minute audiovisual presentation about the region’s nature and ways of life, shown regularly. While the garden brings together a range of features on site, the presentation focuses on regional nature and ways of life.
Wine and traditional dishes are also among Fermoselle’s distinctive features. The town’s wine is associated with a local grape variety and the Arribes designation of origin. Bacalao is considered a traditional gastronomic product; bacalao a la tranca is prepared in the Spanish style with oil and garlic. Another regional speciality is hornazo de Fermoselle: a bread-like pastry made from unleavened dough with lard and oil, filled with chorizo. These ingredients and preparation details give you specific pointers if you are also interested in regional food culture during your trip.
